My 81 DD Run-About / Baja Buggy Style

Been working on this for about three years now off and one, bought it with no engine, trans, exhaust, radiator and other things.

Got the engine and trans off of Jimbo before he left the US and been picking up other bits and pieces from members as I go along.

Got it running and pass California smog back in Nov. of 14, it is going on 2 years that I have been driving it around. Still has warm start issues after replacing everything typical so going to go through the Fuel distributor again soon.

Did not take alot of picture in the begining of the engine bay clean up and painting, was more interested in getting it running then taking pictures as I went.

Interior cleaned before painting floor:



One thing I took pictures of is the finished floor work. I gutted the interior, cleaned the floor and my wife and I painted it with DIY bed liner material. Then once it was dry my wife and I painted it with some light gray rustoleum oil based paint I mixed up. We had some left over cans of white and black from another project, so put it to use.

I also made my own shifter out of the shock bottom pivot ball, welded on two diameters of DOM tubing and taped the top for an old school plan round shifter ball. It can be seen in this first picture.

Big black cable on the passenger side floor is an E30 positive battery cable as the battery is relocated in the trunk.

The radiator core support - or front body cross panel - was in bad shape as it has been cut up for turbo intercooler tubing to go through. Turboed engine was never installed so I patched the holes cleaned it up and rattle canned it black.








Relocated Battery in trunk and re-routed positive battery cable. Re-routed it as I am not putting in the back seat back in but will be putting in wood floor and back covered with carpet for our dog and stuff.

Max the rear strut brace/battery hold down is a Ken Danielson design built by Bruce. Not sure who can do these now? I have thought about getting some made but just no extra time at the moment.

Who makes/sells this rear strut brace?

I've seen them on ebay, I think TEP makes them currently.

Put on the adjustable coil over front struts I bought off Ken Danielson a few years back, installed 98mm studs and 15mm wheel spacer along with E30 BBS Basket Weaves and new General Atlimax Arctic Snow tires. I know it does not snow where I live but we do have dirt and sand to play in !!

I have a 4:10 LSD I am going to put in this for more traction.

Well I did some work on the lathe and got the adjustable coil over sleeves and top hats mounted on the Rear Bilstein HDs I bought off Max years ago done. So last week I got them installed in the car and also mounted the BFG A/Ts in the back for a test fit. Liked the way they fit so I left them on the car, because it rained today I took the car out for a little dirt road run in some mud. Did not go too crazy but I do think this car is going to be fun!

I still have the general snow tires in the front, front will require fender cutting to make room for the BFG's.

I am thinking the whole bottom will get covered at some point, tanks and front foot rears for sure and most likely the rear diff for the logging & fire roads.

Haha yup! He still has yet to do the rear flares on it, but still a great look imo.
