No I do not want to swap in an m50.
Heres the thing, I plan to put my m30 motor in eventually, so a lot of the stuff I am getting now can move over to the m30, Like intercooler, turbo, wg, bov, injectors, ect.
I already have the complete motor, 5 speed trans, harness and ecu. Just need mounts and a custom driveline.
I WANT the proper ERA motor in the car, not a ls, 5.0, m60 or anything else.
So you may ask why not do the m30 swap now, it will be about the same or a bit cheaper than the turbo m20. Well I think the turbo will be fun and have more power than a stock m30.
I'll be porting the eta head, valve grind and surface, with dual valve springs, using reinz oem head gasket and I just got a great deal on some arp studs. With a custom tuned eprom chip for 30lb injectors, 6000rpm redline and 12 lbs of boost I think it will be plenty fun to drive, for awhile.
Also I will have the I intake and throttle body with m30 air flow meter, already have.
Oh and Iv'e already purchased the head studs and gasket set so no turning back now.
Heres the setup, go ahead and flame the cheap turbo too please. I did do some research and these guys seem to have a decent rep for knock off turbos. I plan to get a real hx40 for the m30.
gt35 knock off turbo $180
EMUSA BLACK GT35 GT3582 TURBO CHARGER T3 AR.70/82 ANTI-SURGE COMPRESSOR
325I inner valve springs $90

UPGRADE JEEP 4.0L BOSCH TYPE III FUEL INJECTORS SET 6 30LB EV1
Fuel Management Unit, Like the BEGI, $100
SPA Turbo 6AN 14:1 FMU adjustable gain rate fuel management unit #VLRPU02
This intercooler will fit behind the grill $145
JDM 28" TURBO INTERCOOLER BLK+2.5" ALUMINUM BLACK PIPING PIPE KIT BLACK COUPLERS
Wont cheap out on the wideband, $161
Innovate Motorsports DB Blue LC2 Wideband Air Fuel Complete Kit 3795
Along with a cheap boost and oil pressure gauge
I already have 3" header back exhaust in the works too.
The tuning will be a custom eprom chip burned just for my setup. I already have a chip from this guy and it made a massive difference, pulls hard now from 3000-5300.
Am I forgetting anything?

Not sure I would trust that turbo. Maybe if budget is main concern , grab a BW s256 or something in the $500 range from BW ?

I can't see why you are against swapping to an M5x but you're ok with swapping in an old, big, heavy boat anchor M30?
Stick with the M20 or swap to an M5x. Also swap to an i cam at least on your M20
As for the turbo kit, fueling choices... You get what you pay for.
Here is my turbo ETA M20 circa 2006. Ebay turbo and wastegate. I first ran a stock ETA with an NA chip tune and an FMU, and later rebuilt the motor with an "I" head and cam, and a megasquirt 1 ECU.
I first ran a stock ETA with an NA chip tune and an FMU, and later rebuilt the motor with an "I" head and cam, and a megasquirt 1 ECU.
If I may offer advice I would suggest getting a megaquirt PNP kit first before you turbo the car. That will give you a very solid foundation to work with for years to come. I would forget about porting the "E" head to accept the "I" intake. When I was in school I ported an E head to outflow an I head but its kind of a waste of time. A stock untouched I head on an E block is 8.3:1 compression and works fine and will greatly simplify this deal. Also don't forget you will also need a better clutch and I didn't see a wastegate in your parts list. You can also save money on the ARP head studs and use class 12.9 socket head cap screws (commonly called "metric blues" in the m20 world) I ran low 20's boost on a stock head gasket and these bolts with a stock ETA bottom end and an I head with oversize valves.
Oh, and you will be solidly disapointed in a non turbo M30 after having a turbo M20. Have fun and start collecting parts for your eventual turbo m50 swap.
Those injectors may be a bit small also. I would have gotten 42s at a minimum..

Oh I forgot some important parts. Obx new design header with external wg. Found half price at $150
wg 10lbs, $60
Only thing I got is head studs, oh well good to know on the other bolts.
U think those injectors too small? I did an equation calculator, at 10lbs boost and 45psi that puts 30lb injectors at 80% duty cycle.

30 is pretty big when used with an fmu. On my old setup I ran like 8 pounds of boost on the stock 14 lb injectors and an FMU with a dinan non turbo chip. It really depends on what the guy burning your chip says you need. I would have thought a turbo chip with big injectors would not need an fmu.

I know your going super budget on this but there are a couple parts you might want to upgrade to give yourself a better foundation to work on in the future as you will eventually upgrade. This intercooler fits nice behind the grills and is very efficient. I run the same one at nearly 800whp. The thermal efficiency on some of the eBay cores is terrible.

And for a blow off valve, the stock blow off valve from a 1g eclipse works really well and they are really reliable. You can get them and the flange at the junkyard for like $30. The eBay ones like you posted often leak.

Yea, the careful selection of parts, sizing and quality will keep you from having to buy them again....I would rather buy used quality stuff then new chinese junk.

Whats so different on that intercooler than the other ones other than its $100 more.
Ah I have an extra 1g eclipse bov, might use that for a bit

The thermal efficiency of the eBay ones is pretty poor. On my m20 I had an cxracing EVO 8 intercooler and now I have the vibrant one I posted above which is half the size of the cc racing one. Even making over twice as much power on half as big an intercooler, my intake air temp are lower with the vibrant. Just a suggestion, many people run the eBay intercoolers with perfect success, go with what you can afford.
one thing I will say for certain, if I could only afford to buy one nice part and the rest had to be Chinese stuff, it would be the tuning. Be sure you can trust whoever your getting your turbo chip from, it will make or break the whole project.
have fun!

Fact is an MS2 will run it well and is not hardly anymore money then you're going to spend anyways. I'd go MS2 and properly sized injectors over the FMU. You can do it safely this way too.

Reinz is garbage. They puke oil and are NOT oem. Goetze or elring. Prefer factory BMW to be safe.

Wow first time ive heard that. I have used reinz on almost all my rebuilds and no oil leaks, some 30k miles later.
For the ms2pnp to work I need motronic 1.3 which means id need the 325I swap. At that point I would just put my m30 in....

I own a BMW repair shop and fix leaking cars for a living. Reinz leaks more than any other brand hands down. We will never use a reinz gasket in my shop. Just my 2 cents. They are cheap crap that the online stores use to make margins.

I would advise against turbocharging M20. You will spend all that money and time and you can't boost much and it won't be reliable. With 12psi you will have detonation and engine won't last. And even if it does, 12psi will net you 240hp, might as well just swap S52 and have much reliable fun car with great resell value.it will be about the same or a bit cheaper than the turbo m20. Well I think the turbo will be fun and have more power than a stock m30.
I don't believe you. Reinz gasket lacks the copper ring seal to seal against the oil delivery to the cylinder head, because of that it will eventually develop a leak on the exhaust side between cylinders 3 and 4. This is well known within E30 community. Just a bare head gasket BMW brand runs about $100 an elring brand runs $70 and Reinz runs $25, there is a reason why junk is cheap.
Well ive never rebuilt an m20 but plenty of m50 and 52s along with many other makes of cars. Ok so theres an.issue with this one engine. Good to know

If Im doing any swap its my m30 because I already have everything, well except mounts and custom drive shaft....
I already bought the m20 head bolts... now idk what todo
Well the chip is under $100 and the fmu is $100, pnp ms2 is $600... I am considering getting the kit and wiring it myself though. Or find one used.
At that point would it be the same one to use on my motronic 1 eta as m1.3? or will that not work at all and I still need to go to m1.3 alltogether.
