Some xi's clunk even though everything is fine. However, because of the design of the transfer case, when the AWD system develops any form of rotational play in the axles or drive shafts, it puts exaggerated stress on the rear differenital bushing and you hear it in the form of a loud clunk. Find the slop in the driveline and I bet you solve your noise.
