yeah my main concern is the head at this point.. im debating heavily about pulling the pistons, sending it to a machine shop to tank and clean.. but i really dont want the added cost of re-ringing the damn thing.. plus main bearings but i'll see what happens

Go directly through Mahle, they sell piston rings for decent costs, pistons too!

I actually found that most people use Grant rings. I sent an email to them since the kit is about $180 for the complete set. So just a de-glazing and re-ring might be the ticket

bmw not listing the cam holder as an available part number kinda makes me think that the cam holders are line bored instead of machined separately before installation

maybe i'm wrong, but regardless of whether the diameter of the "new" cam holder bore is within spec, the bore could definitely be axially off by a thou or two. which might be acceptable for these engines... or not. i'm sure bmw has a spec somewhere

maybe call up a machine shop that has a reputation for working with s54s and see what they think? they might be able to weld-r-up and rebore the hole too

Hey bud, I think bad news here, don't want to see you invest anymore time into something you shouldn't. Would it be easier to get a new head than to have your new thrust bearing flange machined?

I actually got one coming to me, so when it's time to do the head work, I'll weigh the options. But I'll have it checked first, I'm sure a machine shop can check the measurements and see if it's going to be ok.

Right now, I'm focusing on the block. Tore it down a lil further today, got the front timing cover off, and the chains and tensioners.
    [IMG][/IMG]

got the balancer off, then noticed something else wrong, the damn pin in the crank is broken, don't know how needed it is because the 4 bolts actually center it correctly

    A forum member, damn 156$...

How does that actually come off with no other bolts visible, must be a dowl

    - - - Updated - - -

On a side note, I was curious about the rod bearings. So I pulled #2 cap, doesn't look all that bad, if you can see it, there barely visible copper starting to show on the bearing. There no ridges or score marks so #2 looks ok, wish me luck on the other 5, lol

    Today's progress:
i decided it's not worth it to leave the unknown.. Unknown... So I stripped the block to its bare ass.
    [IMG][/IMG]

this little cart I picked up from harbor freight, it's pretty nice. Pistons out. This black 6 section tray I also got for 5$ at harbor freight, perfect for this job

    [IMG][/IMG]

    The block
    [IMG][/IMG]

I have been bagging and labeling everything, including the main caps and bolts, and their position in the block
    [IMG][/IMG]

    - - - Updated - - -

Another thing to note, the rod bearings all looked pretty good, same with the main bearings, except for #6 main, it was a bit beat up, crank looks to be great though.

so to you guys that have changed main bearings, I noticed that there are color codes when ordering new ones. Like red or yellow or green ect. How do you know what to order and what do these color codes mean?

    - - - Updated - - -

I'll be sending the block to my local machine shop that a very good euro independent shop uses. I've used them before on my S52 head rebuild. Having them clean it, depending on price I might have them put the main bearings in and set the crank

I'm not sure, but I would imagine the different colors are for different sizes of the bearings to + or - the tolerances when you're doing a rebuild...

    Today's update:

dropped the block off at the machine shop. First thing we did was to set out the main caps and bolts. The caps were stamped 1-7, but only 1-3 were remotely visible so they were going to stamp them properly. They are also going to check the line bore, hot tank, and de-glaze the cylinders. Going to also drop off the crank to be checked and cleaned on Monday.

    Todays update:

dropped off the crank to the machine shop yesterday to check the journals. Also today received my BMW bearings treated by WPC and rod bolts from the group buy over on M3forums.. great price, if you guys need them, head over there.

Did you get that crank snout issue resolved?

I hadn't checked in awhile, I have a few of those if need one. I had put two through cryo treatment to insure the teeth not sheering off from any unforeseen stress. Cryo'd both chain sets as well since have seen enough snapped ones on and off the track.

Let me know, think last time I sold one just did $60, priority mail. Knew it was worth holding onto them lol, have probably sold 3-4 due to exact same issue.

yeah im planning the Z3 M harness...

    crank issue.. rod issue...

The crank got whipped.. #5 rod spun its bearing... making the crank need to be taken down to .001" and the rod journals to .002". problem is.. there are no bearings made for the S54 for that. the #5 rod was decently messed up too... good news on that, is i found a replacement rod...

Now i know the issue, change one rod, have to change them all, not the case, machine shop will re-balance all rods.

The bigger issue.. the bearings for the crank. Here is what they propose:
they found a bearing that will work, from a turbo honda. correct size for the mains, issue is that its a tad too wide.. Clevite bearings, apparently can custom cut these to the correct width..

My take on it: ditch the crank, buy a clean used one, use stock BMW WPC treated bearings(that i currently have) and not waste time dicking around with the crank.

on a brighter note, i did manage to find a newer oil pump from a 67k mile car at a price that was too good to pass up.

Also got a new piston ring set directly from Grant Piston Rings. Funny story about this:
a lot of guys recommended these rings, problem, finding them for sale, every vendor i called or emailed said they were out of stock.. price ranged from 189-215$.. getting frustrated i emailed Grant Rings directly.. 1st email.. no response for a week, second email no response for 4 more days. Decided to call them directly, they picked up right away, spoke to a nice girl on the phone, told her what i was looking for by part#. I asked if they had any in stock and if so do they sell direct? She found 3 sets, and said sure we can sell direct... thats $65.. .... .... uhh i said i need all 6, a complete set not just 1 piston... she replied, yes thats a complete set of 6, ..... ... umm ok heres my card#
feeling that i probably just bought only 1 set for 1 piston.. i made the transaction anyway.. 2 days later.. box arrived.. complete set for all 6 pistons!!!! booyaaww!!!!

    The funny part:
1 day after the rings arrived, i get an email back. email is from one of the sales managers appologizeing that he didnt get my first email. Then goes on to state that they DO NOT sell direct, but could point me to a vendor to sell me what i wanted. LOL.. i guess either this girl wasnt supposed to sell me the product or the guy doesnt know they can sell direct.. im thinking its the first one.. lol.. anyways.. got a screaming deal on the rings.

    Nice info update-

im working on part numbers for DME clip, connectors, pins 16,18,20,22AWG and wire gauge for each pin in plug if you find you want to extend the harness the correct way vs my stupid dive right in mistake. With a crimper, proper AWG chart etc...I think this is the best way. And as for knock and crank sensors, the pull right out of the main harness, Are still insulated and are easily rounter the 3 alone to the DME chamber. Let me know if you want more info.

Also check with Andrew Lang over at lang racing, I think it is, in CA. If you haven't heard, they completely modify the rotating assembly to accept larger Rod bearing and I believe new rods. He may even be interested in yours for a spare.

You could re-coupe Wpc bearing cost, rings, etc...maybe worth it for that level of reliability after??

    German ones
Andrew Lang is a stand up guy, and knows his shit concerning the S54. He was a tremendous help to me during my build and can answer any questions you may have. I would suggest having a chat with him about your motor.

He does have a wide journal kit available, but it will require his custom Carillo rods and is roughly $3K.

He likely has a good used OE crank on hand, as well as a set of OE rods, just call. I would go this route with your WPC bearings.

Yea, Andrew is a plethora of info. That's actually one of whom I emailed concerning your tolerances left. It sucks bmw only does one oversize for these engines.

Let me know if still need a crank, also have tons of rods in 10 or 11mm sizing, but I'll hopefully be taking this other motor apart this weekend, or into next week.

Work on getting you up and running!

so its been almost a month.. and today i went down to the engine shop. talked to the guy working on my stuff.. we decided to scrap the idea of using odd sized bearings and all that.

So thankfully a member on here has a stock crank that will work for me. So just waiting on that, (only just made the deal) then the engine shop will balance the rods, and the crank.

    Update:
the crank came in, will drop it off tomorrow at the machine shop. Other various parts have been trickling in such as a new oil pump, tons of gaskets and washers and bolts. Got a few tools as well, the cam alignment set, shim kit, shim tool.

Nice! Did you get the techna e36 coolant sensor adapter? I'll try to run through stuff in my mind that I did. Then had to redo because it needed adjustment or something.

So so basically you're getting the rods fitted to the crank and you're good to go!?

also maybe have them clean up those unused block threads, that your E36 mounts now use...remeber I had a nerve racking day cleaning those threads out after years of element exposure.

What thread size are those holes? Yeah just need them to verify the specs on the crank, polish if needed, balance the rods, clean the pistons. Then I can start the bottom end build, after that I'll start on the VANOS rebuild, then move onto the head.

oh and I need the get some main bearings, going to send those out to WPC as well, they quoted me $4 per half shell
