Coming soon to enthusiast auto a 2002 s54 m coupe. price $45000 lol
Closed at $53000... or $38,950 in 2002 dollars... any guesses on the sticker price in 2002?
I think sticker was have been $46,200 in 2002, IIRC. Plus destination. Same as 2001. $5K more than the S52s. Although now my feeble brain is questioning, maybe it was a $6K difference, so $47.2K?.
I like the unicorns.

'16 Z4 sDrive35i - Estoril Blue/Walnut (1-of-8)
So: a $46200 car in 2002, inflation correcting the dollars becomes $62863 2017 dollars... and it went for $53000, and with 20k+ miles... probably not a bad price for the buyer; though for the seller, maybe thinking that this was an investment (since with only so few miles they didn't derive a lot of smiles per gallon), probably generously described as a push.
Since he did not drive the car much, if he had bought gold coins with that money, gold was $342/oz in 2002. He could have gotten 135.08 ounces of gold, the spot price right now for gold is $1320/oz and his 135,08 ounces would be worth $178,315.00. There are other investments that may have netted more but gold is comparable to a car as it is a lump of shiny metal.

If he bought it late 01, he also would have had a chance to buy Enron stock instead of the M coupe.

I don't know if it's been shared or not, but you can easily subscribe to new BMW's that pop up and they'll email them to you. It's fun to see what pops up.

Just wanna say that could be said about everything. Regardless of miles, I'm sure joy was derived from owning the M. Why spend any money on anything at all? Invest invest invest. Just hope you don't die or get too old before you get to enjoy any of it.
It's always a balance. But yeh, cars aren't the greatest investments on average.
Though, buying BMWs at the bottom of their depreciation curve is a lot more financially sane (provides you can turn wrenches yourself) than buying a new car and losing 20% value just by driving it off the lot
Do they get much better than this? Bone stock Imola Roadster with hardtop and 23k miles:

Well, I see another steel gray S54 on BAT. I can't help wondering why the wheels look like hyper silver instead of shadow chrome, but a nice car.

... inspect the pictures. It’s shadow chrome.

The latest S54 Coupe on BAT is up to $37,777 with just a few hours to go. What kind of idiot buys this car and then only puts 8000 miles on it in 16 years?
