Cargurus.com sends me emails with new Z3s that are listed for sale. The filter sends links to 2000-2002 manual roadsters that are either 2.8 - 3.0. To me it seems like there have always been a lot of these to choose from and the prices stay in the $12K-$16K range (even with Covid). Recently, it looks to me like the supply has shrunk and the prices have risen. I get that these are asking prices and may not reflect sales prices.
31K miles -2000 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster RWD - $19,997
28K miles - 2001 BMW Z3 3.0i Roadster RWD - $22,800
33K miles - 2000 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster RWD - $22,691
24K miles - 2002 BMW Z3 3.0i Roadster RWD - $28,900
These cars are all pretty low-mileage, but there cargurus only shows 13 cars for sale (with my filter) in the country. Maybe these are going to shoot up in price finally?
Latest BAT sales seem to nowhere near support those prices. Of course there are the oddball highs and lows that boggle my mind.

I think that most guys that are selling theses cars are not hurting financially. Therefore when they put the car up for sale, they start high and if it doesn't sell then drop a little at a time until it finally sells. That way they get what ever the market will bear at that point in time. Not really a bad strategy when selling anything. As long as you don't need the money right away.

I think it might just squeak into the 40s. I wouldn't pay that, but it's just a feeling. 6 months ago I would have said 45k. The beige might hold it back some, even though I really like DBO.

Evergreen is my unicorn, but I really, really want an evergreen two-tone interior. I'm still going to bid on this, regardless.

At the end of the day it's pretty love it or hate it color, and it's still a 100k mile car. I'd say the end price was about what it was worth. About smack-dab between good & excellent condition price wise on the hagerty valuation guide, which is about where i'd place that car.
It will be interesting to see how prices change over the next 3, 6 and 12 months for coupes and roadies. I also wonder what percentage of owners are willing to sit on perhaps a declining asset or decide to hold long term for a turnaround. I bought my roadie to drive and enjoy; I'm not an owner looking to make a profit, so my Z's value can go to zero as long as it continues to put a smile on my face

Trend on all cars is still up right now with no indication of even staying neutral. The 9.1% CPI rate is a big contributor to that. I suspect there will be a drop in the car market at some point soon, but it's not that soon.
As for these cars, they're getting old enough and expensive enough across the board that anyone buying one at this point isn't do so as an investment. It's simply because they want one, cost be damned. The late 90's early 2000's market is just the hot market right now as people who were kids back then can now afford their dream cars from that period.
Good point. Until the upper-middle class is affected by inflation, I believe your argument will hold true. However, according to the one Fed report, upper score individuals are starting to take on debt at an alarming rate. This is an interesting stagflation time we live in

I'm getting different info I guess. The 30 day, 60 day and 90 day delinquent rate is rising across the Nation. That's one of the first signs of a change in course. The reason I have been paying attention to these charts is because I have just been starting to shop for a car for my wife. By the way, I'm looking at a 2019 440i x drive coupe for her with the B58 turbo i6. Any experience good or bad with this car?
I've observed used car prices near me to be dropping in price pretty quickly recently. Not quite a return to "pre-crazy" levels but there are more cars available for reasonable prices in recent weeks than I have seen in a long time. The situation may be different elsewhere, but I think there is a correction occurring in some markets now. I don't foresee "collectible" cars to drop in value anytime soon but I do expect the exponential increase in value to plateau
The B58 is a solid engine though I don't know much about the 440 itself. Personally I'd avoid xDrive if you plan to own it long term and it doesn't come with a warranty. Though if you need the AWD then I do understand the modern xDrive systems are a lot better than the older ones. It still complicates a lot of other repairs though having all the AWD stuff in the way.

That reminds me, I might put my snow tires on the Coupe this winter. I got lazy and ran the A/S all of last year, snow and all. It did OK, but there's really no substitute for AWD or REALLY good snow tires, so I get it. Wife's new CX-30 was a tank in the snow, so if my Coupe ever goes bye bye, I think I'll grab a new Mazda 3 hatch. That turbo 2.5 is addictive, as I imagine a B58 would be. B58 was named as a top 10 engine a few years back, so I'm sure it's still very good.
