Ah, gotcha. Bummer. Sunroof repair sucks. I did it in early last year, and I'll likely never do it again.

This past weekend I took the M5 on a 2 day trip to Abingdon, VA and the Claw of the Dragon. We took Hwy 421 through Boone all the way up and it was a total blast. We then did an up/down run of the back of the dragon. The car did very well and was a lot of fun to drive. I got tons of compliments from everyone about the sound of the exhaust, mostly from people that were driving behind me . It never once droned and it was just so nice to hear the entire 2 days.

Some pics taken on 421, aka "The Snake":

We had about 18 cars on the way up on day 1, but the drive on day 2 was down to 7

The weather on day 1 was spectacular for driving. About 72F in the afternoon with a nice breeze. We stayed at The Martha Washington hotel in downtown Abingdon, VA.

Day 2 was a bit cooler during the day, but warmed up when we got back down from the mountains.

Overall, it was a really fun trip.

In other news, a couple weekends ago, my fuel pump relay module that I had purchased when I did my S62 swap in my e38 back in 2012 died. Borrowed a friend's relay module from her 2004 M3 convertible and it worked perfectly. I bought a new one as a spare and she did too, so now I'll have a spare. I'm glad it happened before the long trip, rather than on it.

    Looks like a fun trip!

How is the fuel pump drive set up with the relay module on the M5s? Is it a variable voltage from a solid state relay, or some sort of a PWM deal?

PWM from the module I believe. It's not really a relay, but rather a module with similar pins to a relay.

So do you think it has RPM or load input to the module? If I'm thinking about it correctly at all, it would seem like it would have to either have an integrated solid state relay to handle the PWM, or it would maybe control an external one.. Not a big deal, I was just curious about how they (BMW) handled it.

I have been helping w/ an E46 M3T build and the owner unfortunately didn't really pay too much attention and bought a SULEV M56 car for the recipient chassis. Pertinent because the SULEV M56 has an "EKP Module" (instead of an "EKP relay") that's pretty complicated. I delved into the whole thing to figure out options to sort it out and discovered...

Euro MSS54 = Straight up old school BMW green relay. On/off. Car is running and pump is running, or, it aint'.

USA MSS54 = 'EKP module' that is pinned, as Paul says, much like a regular relay. But seems to be driven by a simple PWM signal from the DME (requested-load based I bet). Most likely just a big ol' MOSFET inside there. Yes you could almost call this a 'solid state relay', because it's not smart in any way, it just is able to switch at high speeds (which would burn out a normal relay real quicklike). Can't be scanned or anything cuz its fundamentally 'dumb'. I'd be pretty certain MSS52 uses exact same setup but have not looked up the info.

SULEV M56 = 'EKP module' that is entirely different - well-more complicated and 'smart'. Gets its instructions via a dedicated ('local') CAN-bus between it and the DME (i.e. not the regular main CANbus between DME and ABS etc.) and therefore it has to be fairly smart. A true 'module' - you can interrogate it for codes and everything. Massively over-engineered if all you are trying to do is keep the tank recirc down (i.e. the M3 relay MUST be much cheaper to buy and to implement... fewer wires, etc.)

Yes, US MSS54 and MSS52 use the same module, hence the reason I was able to use my friend's m3 module to get my M5 running.

    Hey guys,

Been a while, but a bit of an update on the car. A week ago Friday I finally got an alignment after doing the coilovers months ago. It was way out, but now is in spec, other than the -2.0 camber I have on the fronts with the GC camber plates. Grip in the corners is so much better now.

Also, a local shop, Euro Mpire run by my buddy Matthew in Monroe, NC, was doing a customer appreciation/dyno day today and I finally got the car dynoed. It did amazingly well:

It was quite warm in the shop (102F), but I still think the curve was very smooth and definitely repeatable. 343whp/347wtq is nothing to shake a stick at and I was very happy to see that it seemed healthy.

My buddy Jeff C ran the 89 325i that we built with my old 03 525i motor out of my wagon and got a really nice 182whp/175wtq, which we were definitely not expecting. We were quite surprised and excited about that.

Looking forward to the HPDE at VIR next weekend .

Good numbers for a stock engine.
    That CTS-V must be FAST.

You guys all dried out from the storm?

We got there after the CTS-V ran, but no doubt it was quick.

Mine is basically stock, just has a tune. Probably a few extra horsepower over a stock tune.

We got a lot of rain over last weekend in Charlotte, but it was pretty much all gone by Monday.

    Paul,
Did you get the GC street front camber plates?
Did they worsen the ride any ?
Was the 525i motor stock ?

Looking for an E39 belly pan , passenger front inner fender liner …

They are the camber plates GC sells with the coilover kit, so not sure what you mean by "street". They are adjustable and I can set them to pretty much whatever I want, within reason. I also never rode without them, so not sure if they affected the ride quality on just normal GCs without them. I believe they are pillowball type, but not 100% sure.

In the 325i build? It was a stock 525i M54b25 engine with E36 M3 headers, no cats, Billy Boat exhaust. Other things done to the motor were a full reseal, VANOS job, CCV, vacuum hoses/blockoffs, SAP delete, with a modified EU2 tune for EWS delete. There were no bolt-ons though. The car is a rocket and so much fun to drive. It's got my old 320z 5-speed with a 3.25 LSD diff. New clutch and flywheel. Z3 1.8 shifter.

Yeah, she is, but handles very well. I'm running Carbotech XP10 front and XP8 rear on the M5 brakes. They don't wear that much at VIR though. Tires hold up ok, but I'm on AS3+s right now and I'm definitely beyond their limits now.

This is why I bought this last week:

2002 330Ci 5-speed to be used for track duty. Has 220k miles on it and needs a bit of suspension love, but engine purrs and is very strong. A few minor things here and there, but overall, a great buy at $1750.

Good purchase! I used to be all about the "one car to do it all" mentality, but then I over-stiffened my 540it and it became very unpleasant to daily, so I've rolled it all back to stock-ish in terms of suspension. You either have a nice comfortable car that doesn't handle amazing on the track, or a tight track machine that dislodges your spine in daily driving. That's why Graham and I bought our E36 M3... it's a lot better for the racecar stuff.

Nice find Paul. I know you won't do it, but for a track car it is begging for an LS3.

This is why I bought this last week:

2002 330Ci 5-speed to be used for track duty. Has 220k miles on it and needs a bit of suspension love, but engine purrs and is very strong. A few minor things here and there, but overall, a great buy at $1750.
Nice find! What's the plans for this one?

Nope, it's keeping the M54B30 and might get a 6 speed. Will eventually get a M3 rear end. Other than that, probably stay mostly stock other than track pads and maybe some safety equipment. Oh, and coilovers, sway bars, etc.

Yup, exactly the situation. The M5 will be much better on the softer GC springs, but it's still probably going to be pretty stiff.

Very nice find! Where will updates for the coupe be posted? I enjoy following all of your stuff!

Are you going to repair the subframe/bulletproof it back there? I don't think the 325/328/330 are immune to that.....
