My son and I just bought a 1969 BMW 1600-2 and it is our first Bimmer. We were told it has an M10 engine but it is a newer 2.0 liter engine, and not the 1.6 liter. I just wrote the engine ID number down and tried to find it on the internet but haven't had any luck. Everything I read says there are 8 numbers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is the number on the block, right above the starter...
+2361385+
And right above this upside down is 2.0 stamped on the same block flange, so I assume that is the 2.0 liter designation.

BMW 2002s also carry the car's matching 7-digit VIN on the engine block. Looking up that engine ID on Realoem.com shows it's from a 2002 produced Oct 1974. Coupled with the 2.0 you also see marked there, I'd say you likely have a 2.0 liter engine that was swapped in by a PO.
