Angry Faulty Trunk Seal in Z4?

Being told by dealer that my Z4 has a leaky trunk seal that may have caused THOUSANDS of $$$ in electrical damage. Took a weak just to diagnose! Car has fewer than 35k miles, mostly garaged, otherwise in great condition. If true, will end my 16-year relationship with BMW.

Not to mention your 1 day relationship with this board!
Not so much a signature as a cry for help.

Hold on, saw this in a cartoon once...think I can pull it off.

Looking at the signature, the OP has a 2010 Z4. If that's the case he should be asking for help on the E89 Z4 sub-forum

It's a 2010 Z4 - garaged, low mileage. Top failed to retract. Told it was an electrical problem; service found small amount of pooled water in trunk, despite it being clean (immaculate) otherwise. After much testing, seal was found to be the culprit, having a leak.

Told water got into trunk through worn gasket/seal. Replaced along with electrical unit at enormous cost. After a big rain when car was not in garage, water in trunk again. To dealer's credit, they are standing behind repair. But an enormous headache, with car in shop about three weeks since the summer.

Have an X5 happy with harsh weather like a polar bear. Not so with the Z4, evidently, even with respect to structure.

When I bought my wife's 2009 Z4 same thing happened after a month. There was insignificant amount of water at the bottom of the trunk and the top hydraulic pump motor was frozen. I figured out that the insulation cover for the pump is like a sponge, it will collect any amount of water from the bottom of the trunk and keep the pump/motor wet at all times. So I removed the pump, disassembled and cleaned the motor, threw away the "sponge" and now 3 years later everything is working fine. Not a dime spent.

I would assume the dealer made sure the drains for the top were not plugged, they are below where the top hinges are if those plug you will have water every where
