I've had my car for less than a year, and so far, I've had 2 people try to race me at stop lights. Funny thing though. They have both been old men driving Ford F-150s.
The first time was a few months ago. It was a guy and his wife in a late 90's model. Handicap plates and all. Guy looked like he could have been a WWII vet. Then again today. Younger than the first guy, but definitely had some years on him. He was driving a newer 2015+ model. I always hope for a mid to late 90's Mustang or Camaro, since I think the stock 540i is of similar performance.
I should also note that I don't go out looking for old guys in pickup trucks to race at stop lights. I see an open road behind that green light and I go.
-funny side note. I was reading a reddit thread one time about BMW driver bashing. -something about how our cars don't come with turn indicators. It seemed the most disliked drivers were those who drove BMWs and those who drove pickup trucks.
So who tries to race you guys? You got a 'type'?

I won the 0-60 times easily in my 530i cause I never had to wait to get a "clear to take-off" order from the mission control.
I get tons of F-150's, Mustangs, Miatas, and Infiniti G35's trying to race me. Oddly enough, never a BMW. Most of the newer BMWs around here are owned by either housewives or pretentious old white guys who will never go past 55mph. Yesterday on the way to Prescott some bro in an F-150 tried to make a few attempts at passing me, but I got ahead pretty easily. Eventually I left him behind and my girlfriend saw him looking out his window at my touring. I'm sure there's still a shock factor in my touring being somewhat fast. It's no M5, but it's certainly faster than people would expect a wagon to be.

A chevy Impala was trying to race me one time. He would change lanes from left to right and back to left just to stick right next to me. I was just cruising in the left most lane and was on my way back home. Had no intention to race anybody that day nor I am that sort of person, as I was dead tired from a 12 hour shift.

A 528i on the highway who just wanted to see what the 540i could do.
A Dodge Ram 1500 on the highway wanting to see the same thing + we had a sharp curve/merge he was egging me on for.
Those two were just having fun expecting to get an ass whooping because at the ends there were laughs, thumbs up, and thanks from both people.
I had complete d-bag cruising fast in a lifted HD Ram 2500, tuned, try to race me coming up from behind on the highway, so I floored it starting at about 80 when he tried to go around me. It was fast but never held, when we hit 90-95 I was starting to get gone and let out at 120 because there was no point. I did not want said fukboi coal-roller in a lifted cummins ram going faster than me.
My 540i is nothing special in terms of speed, but compared to those vehicles it is a very fun machine.

They almost never arrest here for racing. What they do most of the time is cuff you then release you with a civil /criminal citation to scare you and then they let you drive home. No license or insurance is a different story...

No one really. A new 911 did try to pass me from a light once He wasn't able to get it done and had a WTF look on his face.

I forgot to mention a race back when I had clogged cats on the car. Your "WTF look on his face" comment is what reminded me of it.
A co-worker of mine and I had a run in OTW to work one morning.
Slow 347 stroker 5.0 Mustang, Vortech blown with a pulley upgrade and custom tune. Went from about a 20 mph roll all the way to 140 when we let out, I was ahead by 2-3 cars by then. Let out because the CEL finally flashed for the increased back-pressure from cat causing a misfire...no sense in going to the limiter when you can't even reach it.
Straight and flat the whole way, early morning so the air was nice and cool. It was very fun. He was in much denial making up excuses as soon as we pulled into the lot, and the rest of the day
Then he told me to try racing his Harley with my Ducati. The harley is not even built crazy. Good laughs.

The ABQ BMWCCA chapter is driving to Santa Fe tomorrow morning for a cars and coffee then a tech session at SantaFe BMW. Should be an interesting drive.
Over here in the UK, it's mainly fiestas and stuff like that... I have had the occasional encounter with Astra VXR's in my Compact 2.8, which isn't as outmatched as I would of thought haha
Been driving a rental car. It's a 2015-16 Buick Regal with a turbo 4 cylinder engine. Nice and quiet and gets upto speed effortlessly. I would like to race and test the performance of this poor man's Cadillac.
