This is not for an M, but a 2002 3.0i Z3 roadster. 21 to 22 average. 24 to 26 if I do more freeway driving. 19 if I drive only city and at 1/4 mile at a time. 29 was the best on a long trip at a steady 70 to 75 MPH. Usually 26 to 28 on the freeway nearly exclusively. Same engine in our long gone 2001 330Ci (of course taller gearing)? 31 MPG at 70.

    In what?

I did 33.1 mpg once. That's based on the MPG gauge which is about 1.5-2 mpg off, so I figure that was at least 31 mpg

Hmm wouldn't it be quite something to have one of those engines in the place of the 1.9 gas?

345 miles swamp to Schuh in a 3.0 auto coupe. Got 27mpg out of a 10psi S52 on one leg home from Zfest this year. But that car normally sees 17 or so.

My S54 normally gets around 23 MPG, but it did get 26.5 MPG running at 70 MPH on I-5 going to Dorkfest last year. Typical range on a tankful is around 245 miles, longest range was 310 miles, the last 15 with the low fuel light on as I looked for a gas station in the middle of nowhere.

Related (I hope)... how much do people trust the red light on the fuel gauge? In reading these postings, I'm wondering if my gas tank is smaller than normal (replaced??)?? ie, when the red (orange) light comes on I've assumed that I have 20 miles left, maybe... but when I fill it I don't think I've ever put 12 gallons in - maybe 11.8 or 11.9, but never even 12.0... but from doing the math from some of the postings, people must be running almost dry and then putting in 13+ gallons... does this make sense? Or is my math off?

13.5 gallon tank, light comes on with 2 gallons left. I fuel after the light comes on, I have a preferred station by the house and by work. Being a 25 mile commute means I can be upwards of 25 miles into the light and it will take 12.5 gallons.

My coupe's speedometer is a bit optimistic, but using the miles/gallons method I am normally around 26 on highway jaunts. On very long rides (to Maine, to Cleveland) I've hit over 28 so long as I keep the speed reasonable.

If memory serves, adjusting for the speedometer should bring the MPG down a bit.

The biggest fillup I ever had was 12.7 gallons; typically I fill up in the 11.5-12.0 gallon range.

The round trip to ZFest this year in my 1998 2.8 was over 1000 miles, and I averaged right at 27.5MPG for the trip. (Excluding the time driving the Tail of the Dragon. There it was closer to 12MPG, rarely got past second gear)
The highway driving averaged 75MPH, and went through the Smokey Mountains, so the 27.5 was exceptional, in my opinion.

According to Fuelly for my 3.0:

    Best: 26.8
    Average: 20.7

The best was on 101, in a mix of 60-100 degree weather, mix of AC on/off, going somewhere between 75 and 90 mph.

I won't be believed but according to my OBC using gas with out alcohol I have gotten 37 mpg (M44) driving with an imaginary egg on top of the accelerator on a few highway trips and it was both ways so elevation assist would cancel out. Not a lot of fun but interesting none the less. Normal driving I get 20-25. I suspect that the OBC gives me a few mpg.

I definitely believe the OBC reported 37 mpg... As for actual mpg thats a different story

Sad story, but I can tell you exactly my gas mileage this weekend was. The wife and I filled up in NH on the way to a weekend in Maine. We have a weird gas gauge right now that I zero out the mileage and fill at 300 miles. Well stupid me, I went to 316 miles cruising down Rte 295 in Maine and the car dies and is out of gas. $65 later having 2 1/2 gallons delivered to me, we were on our way.

    So, 1997 2.8 manual:

For that tank of gas (1/2 highway, 1/2 windy roads) 23.4 miles/gallon...

20 to 21 MPG on a 2.8 L 98 Roadie with 110K on the clock, most driving is around town to work, lots of stops and hills. Also lots of fun between all those stops and around all those bends.

I think the best I ever got was on the way to the last Homecoming. It was around 28-29mpg with stock S54 diff.

This is not a metric I care about in this car though...lower the better.

Using the reading from my OBC, I averaged about 25.5 miles per gallon highway miles on trips from Los Angeles to Monterey (I went twice in two weeks) in my 3.0 M54 coupe. https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymake/BMW2001.shtml This site tells me I should be getting 26 miles per gallon (highway), but with my 3.15 (swapped from 3.07), I think I'm about where I should be.

With the wife in the car I can get 20 MPG on the highway. Without wife, around town, putting 500 horsepower to the ground = 12 MPG.

I think I have seen 300 miles on the odo once or twice ever between fillups. I usually fill at 250-275 mile showing. That gauge sure drops fast once you pass the halfway mark! Stock S52 Coupe.

I personally don't worry about mpg in my Mcoupe. I drive like I stole it most of the time. Our Jetta TDI gets 45 mpg..

I'm pleased to find this thread. I use Fuelly.com to track the mileage of all the cars I use regularly. You can see the little tag in my signature which should show the current avg. MPG for all fill-ups of my Z3 (2.8-litre).

Some tanks are a complete write-off. Since buying the car 2.5 months ago, I have burned through at least 2 tanks simply for fun and with total disregard for economy. However, on several occasions, I've taken the car on routine road trips I make to an out-of-state office (each leg ~140 miles). During those trips, I consciously try for excellent fuel economy. Partially this is for my own amusement, and partially because 2x 140 miles plus driving between legs gets me perilously close to running out of fuel before I return home. Thus, the better the fuel economy, the less likely I need to stop along I-95 somewhere to top off before the trip's end.

My best tank so far was one such trip in mid-May: 325.2 miles @ 29.19 MPG (11.142 gallons used). Generally, I use cruise control when on the highway between Philly and DC...probably keeping revs around 3000rpm. I believe I had the hardtop on for that trip--I'm unsure if that has any bearing on the economy, as I suspect any minimal aerodynamic benefit is offset by the extra weight.

Is anyone else using Fuelly.com? I'd be glad to accept friend requests on that site for comparison purposes. Also, the phone app is pretty useful and various displays of data are available both via the app and website, so you may wish to check it out.

In my 3.0 coupe with an auto im getting 18mpg That's driving pretty easy around the city. I think the auto and 255/295 tires are sucking it back.

I bet I get better MPG once I swap in the LS/T56
