Howdy all. I'm doing some of the basic maintenance on the car. Oil, filters, brakes and rotors. I have my left front off and was inspecting the shock and see this
Are these spacers that are shot? What are they and what does it mean?
HALP!!
So through a little research I ended up in an old thread on a VW forum and found out these are the shipping blocks used to keep cars from bouncing around too much when shipped. My car only has 22k miles but you can see them in the previous post as they were getting crushed and preventing my suspension from reacting as it should. I checked the right side and found this
Torn dust boot which could have happened from
1. the shipping blocks disintegrating and ripping the boot apart as the pieces fell out
2. It's is 8 you old car and possibly normal wear but with only 22k miles unlikely.
So now what? Car has been out of warranty for 4 years and I could not detect any damage to strut mounts or anywhere on front suspension. Should I bother going back to dealer and talking to them?
Unless you can find some sort of recall about the issue or you have a really tight relationship with the dealer, I wouldn't expect them to do anything on a car so far out of warranty.
Stuff happens, no part is perfect, repair it and move on.
Not so much a signature as a cry for help.
Hold on, saw this in a cartoon once...think I can pull it off.
I didnt think so. A buddy is telling me to go back but I didn't see the point. Guess I was a little curious if anyone else experienced this and what they did
Did you buy this car used, recently, from a dealer? If so I'd be heading back there pronto. There's no way a car should leave the lot like that.
I'm the only owner. Ordered from factory back in 2008. We don't drive it much and doesn't get tracked so never noticed as i am just starting to do things to it
Just found 1 of these inside of each Strut Boot on my 2000 540I. 2 Mechanics said it was part of the Bump Stop apparatus, and that I needed to install new Struts.
