    2001 740iL Project

Hi guys! So, I wanted to share my most recent project. WARNING!!!! NOT YOUR NORMAL SWAP!!!!

I found an Anthracite on Tan 01 740iL on craigslist for $2500. First, the car didn't run which was a horrible sign, but i figured I would take a look. Always loved that color package. So, I went to take a look and was pleasantly surprised. It did need timing chain guides, but it had H&R lowering springs, cold weather package, an almost perfect set of Mpars and the interior and exterior were almost perfect. So, after about an hour of dickering around I talked the kid into $1500. On the tow truck it went.

Now to the project part. I am very partial to everything about BMW but I am also very partial to the Old School Muscle. So, I found a donor car and have never looked back. The project has now turned into a complete swap to a old/new 427! This is a project with me and my father. I love everything about the BMW style and just wanted some more motor. He had the idea and we have never looked back. I got the motor out of an old Galaxie. It started as a 390. I had it bored to a 427 and put a 427 crank in it. This motor has been rebuilt from the ground up. Nothing spared.

So.... I will document more thoroughly later, but here is where we are at the moment. A short video of the monster running. There is still a lot to do, but it is almost ready for the first break in.

Seems a little backwards to go from a sophisticated fuel injection system to a carbureted one... I'm not opposed to these swaps but I would have gone with something a bit more modern. That's just my opinion though.

Love it! Really interested to see how much of the bmw componentry you keep and if so how you'll make it work. What trans, drive components etc...... Do what you like but a real quiet exhaust would be awesome with a diversion system when on power.
    Definitely subscribed. Awesome work.

Yea it is but.....I have never owned a carbureted engine lol. So I thought it would be better to go from carbureted to fuel injected than the other way around. I just want to see the difference between the two. Eventually it will have fuel injection , maybe, idk lol.

So far, engine and trans are swapped. No longer BMW. I am not very up and up on the subject but I would like to make a BMW 6 speed fit the 427. The rear, suspension, steering box and half shafts are all still BMW. Had to get a new front driveshaft made. Still workin out the wiring at the moment.

Transmission shifter linkage is in....but still having issues. Might be looking at changing out the shifter at this point. A little more playing around will tell. I was trying to keep original shifter. We shall see.

Closer and closer. Roof, trunk and front spoilers came in. Need to get the hood modified and those painted sometime soon. She should have her first road appearance in the next 2-3 weeks!

What are your plans for the electronics on this car? How are you going to run the dash?

Currently speedometer and fuel gauge still work. I want the tach and temp. Gauge to work so working on that now. As far as the other electronics, dsc, brake and abs light are currently still off as of today. I am plugging the temp sensor off the water pump into a 3/8 NpT to M10 adapter and running through the DME. I will also be fixing the crankshaft positioning sensor to be next to the flywheel so the tach also will still run through the DME. Everything else I could care less. I'm not a huge have to have guy. I have my limits. I don't need engine management anymore since it's pretty simple now. Air/fuel/fire. I can figure them out. However the DSC module is going to have a bit of an issue soon. I want to redo the rear at some point. Made the original shifter work this weekend as well!!!!! Hood and power steering are the next hurdles.

Love it. Apart from the drop you have to keep it sleeper! This build has got to be chapping the "you know what" of a few purists in here.
Please don't do a flame job or Laker pipes.

Haha! I hope so! I'm not sure about the exhaust just yet. But I can tell you there will be Absolutely ZERO flames! I'm still debating what to do with the hood. I don't want a cowl hood but I really need more clearance lol.
