My hood release mechanism cracked while I was trying to troubleshoot why only one latch pops at a time, and now the cable is not being held properly in the sheath. So to open my hood I have to use pliers and pull the cable.
Has anyone replaced this cable? What's involved?
p.s. turned out my driver's side latch just needed grease, so I broke the stupid cable holder for nothing!
I got my used one from Wuffer, 5 years ago, Comes with both latches and cable, Easy to install, Great place to shop!
if it's the front cable with the 2 latch locks, It will slide from under the bumper cover I think, Been a long time since I replaced it but no main body part had to be removed, This may be a different story for the hoodl cable inside the car.
Unfortunately it's the one that runs inside the car. =(
I had it done by the BMW body shop years ago but can't help since I didn't see it done. My front left fender was already off (not a big deal though) at the time.
Check factory repair manual for procedure
I have done it. I did it at the same time my car was painted so it was pretty much stripped. It is not difficult at all. You have to remove kick panel and the plastic panel under the dash. Once you locate where it goes through the fire wall you just have to locate the same spot behind the fender. I believe you can see the spot if you remove the tyre and the inner liners inside the fender. A good trick is to pull the new cable through by using the old cable as a guide. Just attach them together GOOD. One person pushes the cable inside the car and the other one gently pulls it from the engine bay. Cable comes to engine bay next to pop up headlight. Not a difficult job. Just a bit tricky. You need a flashlight.
