I had a few minutes, but was caught by my girl coming home from work. So coaxed her into helping with the jack a minute too.

I see a subframe!!! ....and are those ARC wheels I see on the M3 in the background? Or are they the actual BBS wheels?
And yeah, 2.7 with the right tune would work, but would need to make it LOOK like I'm still running Motronic and the AFM, even if I have swapped to a MAF (hoping to do that soon-ish).
Metal Bumpers Are For BEEETCHES!!!!! "King of Lean" - Retired
"If that bikini isn't made of Micro-Fiber and has Quick Detailer on it then GTFO!" -BabyM
ARC8; lightest and best wheel can get. Apex just had a group buy again but unfortunately it was only for the 17x8.5 concave wheels which didn't fit my BBK Wilwood 6pots. I still run the original 8" flat wheel profile.
Oh come on can just do like the earliest DTM guys. Put the AFM in there for looks but gut it due to rules . BTW now days the newer version Maxx Alpha-N piggyback has full wideband loop control. Which basically means there's now an additional AFR target table. You set the ratio's or choose table provided. Then the car runs in loop automatically targets the ratios. This is handy for getting it to run until can tune later. It's recommended to eventually bring your main map to the target table so minimal correction is needed. But there's also a popup box display that shows the AFR so you don't have to glance at the wideband itself. Then there's ALSO the loop display that shows exactly how many + or - numbers your map is off from that AFR display. Makes work on your own quicker to road tune. There's info on S14power.com; Can still get the Maxx AN from John or Markus.

Headed down for a cold one and make a materials list. Walked outside to inspect some steel we bought and about that time Dad was walking up. So we dropped the front. I've some dent pulling for him to tackle. My plan this weekend if goes well is cut the rest of the old diff support, then put the new rear diff mount in. The subframe mounts need a bit of help too first. They are the old racetep solid steel ones of course. Which really are just factory mounts with washers welded on. The tabs are weak since they bolt with just 15mm bolts. I plan to make them welded on. Oriented short side up to bring the subframe closest to the body correcting roll center a bit. The trail arm bushings are super old urethane and one side is dust ie missing
It doesn't go upside down unfortunately. But rolls over pretty good. If mounted a few inches up it would roll all the way. You can roll by hand now that it's just the frame itself. It can be felt where the center of gravity is and honestly the hoist is just barely doing anything. Doing this by hand for seam stitching will be one hell of a job. Not having a pre dipped chassis will take about all my patience but I want to soldier through it however long it takes. I think it's growing up with this car and the memories it gave me. It has the right to dedication.

tackling da junk in da trunk
Few rounds of "Fight Club" (aka oven cleaner aka lye) and things look like they were first born. Definitely the easy beer drinker method of cleaning your car. I might just go buy some extra cans to do the underside of the car when ready. I found the cheapo brand no name stuff works better than easy off Set your open beer in another place when spraying.
Fixing the bendy/flexy subframe mounts but let me back up. My mounts were bolted under the subframe lip and driver side was bent along with the bolt/pin. It could be how they were bolted underneath, but not sure about that. I had to take out the mount pins and straighten the bent one with a BFH on the vise. The other was pool cue perfect when rolled. Now both were true. Needless to say beer started early this morning. The subframe mount I straightened also by tweaking in the vise till eyeball straight. Then I could finally mock up the rear parts together. Welded in a new rear diff support using all 11ga material. I saw how the original brace tied into the fender well. So notched the top rail till I could make mine go end to end. Welded it in place then capped it top and bottom with angle pieces to the rail. Mocked up parts again. Did this a few times then made the subframe mounts welded on once satisfied. Seamed up the under side of the subframe where the factory stopped. One thing I learned is to always save your metal scraps unless they are dust or shards. Never know what you'll need to fill a hole or gaps. I used cut scraps from the 1" angle to enforce the subframe mounts on the underside. Had to use another piece to fill a extra hole on the driver frame rail.
Old BMP? urethane trail arm bushes. Made them melty and drifted them out. I've some nice delrin ones from the last e30 that are still good to replace with.

You're truly making some restoration porn here at an astounding pace! Nice bead you laid down there, is that the rear diff hanger? Haven't spent much time back there yet
-John
final mock up after some paint; still the rear strut towers to go and tie into this brace is the plan
Long ways but this is at least a start. Makes me feel like something was accomplished. Still cleaning up the trail arms and will put the new delrin bushes in them. I need to check and repack the wheel bearings. Maybe put new street shoes in instead of the carbotech panther plus (XP8); they aren't so good until hot.
Funny thing is Dad hasn't even seen any of this yet. He's been too busy to visit since yesterday. Should get him motivated. This past two days has been about a 6pk of nooners, a hophunter, and a couple reeds ginger brews w/ makers. It's early enough maybe tackle some of the strut towers to see what I'm in for.

So measured the rear strut towers and they were still true. With Dad using the hammer I wheeled off the pipe we had surrounding them. These were left over parts of the old school 4pt cage I had. Once the passenger side pipe was cut off. . . Holy Hand Grenades kids that's a gap! No worries the tower itself is structural and it's just the sheet of the inner fender. But damn what a pain in the ass. I mentioned I hate sheet right. Opened a few beers and went in.
Plated the sides of the towers with some 1/8" plate and a 1" x 1/8" moly tube brace. Then joined to the diff with more 11ga 1" square. Yea.

and here's how it handled so nice using my custom E21 parts control arms. When Fred asked me would I test arms I said "sure, but I want mine made out of solid aircraft aluminum to look like urethane" . So yup these worked great for years of autox.

Thanks. We'll be down 2 holes so weight matters even more.
Right now I'm just thinking minimal weight with the right strength. The main 4pt bar will have to be later this month and spec'd for rules. In case we can actually do hill climbs. Just hoop, rear stays, and diag bar. The rest will be lighter bars. If can get more or even lighter of this 1" stuff I'll use it. My steel supplier here local carries it on occasion. It's left over cuts from probably some dirt car guys, so I get it at scrap cut prices
I've a few other small ideas, but at this point no full cage just the 4pt. I'm interested to see how sub 2000 lbs it can get when done.
What's HDX weigh?

Brendan's car is at 18XX something - need to ask him again.
Ours with all of 120ft 1.5" X .090" wall chrome moly is 2130lbs with 8 gals of gas in it and 9" wheels that weigh almost 23lbs each. Some rules say 1.5" DOM tubing has to be .125" wall.

Brendan older car was around 1780 or so.

I struggled with weight vs. stiffness and strength, with wanting to do track days with the car also.

Awesome; great info.
Yes most rules I have say 1.5 DOM = .120 (1.769 lb/ft) and 1.75 DOM .095 (1.596 lb/ft). Going to try to do the mains with 1.75. With skinned trunk lid, and fiber hood, gutted shell I'd like to see 1800. It may be resorting to swiss cheese(drag racer mentality) to get there but we'll see how far we want to go.
Yeah I ponder full caging the M3 one day. Track days "feel" different. I feel much more comfortable with some tubes around me, good seats and harnesses.

Charbel claims under 2k lbs on his gutted, caged, m30 car. I need to get mine to the scale but I doubt I've lost much weight with the suspension swap.
Seems the 2k mark should be a breakable reality then. I marked more areas last night for cutting, and some to trim up with the grinder next time. Still have the underside to go. Dad is hopefully picking up some steel for me today if they have what I want.

No brews for a few hours; need to do some critical measuring and thinking first. About to start wheeling off some other front end stuff and I need more time to conjure up a method.
So while I crank the music staring at this frame, measure, smack a punch for reference marks, the deer had lunch.

My current car is 2046 which includes 200 lbs ballast . The ballast was needed for balance and for the scca rules .
It's a little heavier than my old 79 . It has a glass front window ,wipers ,and head lights .
It has a 4130 6 point cage , The front and main hoop are to scca Specification for 4130 tube . The rest are 0.0635" 4130 tube . I did not cut out the trunk floor either. Just modified and reinforced it for a alpina dual mount diff cover.
The old 79 cheater car was getting close to 1600 lbs .

Thanks Brendan. Wow 1600's that's unimaginable, but a great power to weight ratio if the motor was that healthy.
I measured several times and finally started the 320 front end. With cutoff wheel as weapon of choice I removed the sway mounts. Cleaned up the wheel wells and welded on some 1/8 plate where the sway mounts were. Made a simple mount for the future suspension to mock up later. Had to stitch the seam of the rear wells back together since that is the fold of the two piece of sheet.
But had to drop tools and help Dad with our 93 Ranger pickup. Three trips to the auto parts store. Advance Auto is terrible btw and I wish carquest service was back. Finally with the correct parts in hand. Rear wheel bearing replacement that ended up taking all day due to the all so common diff pin lock bolt breaking off. He had enough left of the original bolt to drill it out and use as a guide. Then drilled the rest of the bolt on the diff. Heated and we forced drove, sheered off the rest to get it apart. Anyways all new bearings back together now and Dad didn't like just that bolt holding the main pin so wanted tack welds on it. Found some nickel rod and gave two tacks per side to button it up. Needless to say we finished late last night. Having breakfast for my Grandma's 94th birthday this morning.

few updates; still working on the front. Probably finish the main tie ins from the front towers to the frame rail next weekend, I kinda just stopped early today. Modded the harbor freight pipe bender for tubing. Works great on some test tubes no kinks. One thing for sure the front will be light.

Where to source new rear halfshafts? I really thought it would be easy just buying new halfshafts since I can get them all day for a honda or e30 bmw like $50ea. What gives and where can I buy or reman a set? Having my buddy call some parts rebuilders crossing numbers. A1 Cardone reman shows one in stock but that's it. I just don't see the mystery, I mean it's just a halfshaft for a 30+ year old car.
