Yes both 1991; M42 powered cars. They have typical mods. The 4dr "i" has a fresh M42 in it less than 2000 miles or so. Previous motor had over 360,000 (very worn chain skipped) Mine is the "is" and probably has over 250,000mi on it. Speedo has been replaced a few times and it's history is a little sketchy being originally owned by a shop before me. I put all new timing components on it last year due to chain rub which is usually a sign of 200-250k miles. I see these cars as right in the middle of a 2002 and e30M. They make amazing daily's, and with a few tweaks hold their own against modern machinery on the road. Once in curvy land it's not much contest they are in element as excellent canyon carvers. An over weighted car of today will have a hard time keeping up.

More rain, so more E21 strip poker. Rolling storms all day it's sunny one minute then pissing rain the next. After more power washing and some rounds of oven cleaner finally the inside is manageable. It will be time to break out the sander. Took out glass and started on everything else. Will remove the sunroof cage I hate that job. Any metal that's unnecessary will be cut away. Lot's of tabs and bracket cutting, rear parcel shelf, trunk floor all of it must go. Weight is the enemy More cutting and then the sanding after sanding; probably mindless beer sanding. Eventually doing inside and out for a coat of paint next year. Still quite a ways before it can go inside for work.

Shedding a few hundred pounds; no . . . not lipo I'm not a surgeon but see some obvious metal that can go. Dad and I picked up some supplies then he had other things to do today. So I started in on my own with Ginger beer (non alcohol). Maybe later make some dark and Stormy's since the day dictates weather wise. My bro makes fresh Ginger beer but recommends this brand when I can't drink his. Today my main goal was just to tackle the sunroof since it's my nemesis item. I cheated on the heat for the bonding agent using a torch instead of the heat gun. Things went much faster than when I did the M3 . It was harder in winter to keep heat in the bonding sealer on the M. But as usual still didn't go as planned. I tagged and drilled every spot I thought was a spot weld, but there is always the hidden ones. Had a few hang ups with hidden spot welds and then a exploding cutoff wheel that took a gash in the shoulder. Put on heavier leather jacket switched to real beer and powered on. The sunroof cage is in by 3 brackets per side. You have to cut the front and rear smaller brackets. The center one is a brace that supports the roof line so have to drill out the spot welds and leave the the brace in tact. Saves tack welding later. Once that's ready there are spot welds up front and sides. Usually on E30's there are 5 in the front and 2 or 3 per side. Always hard to see even after sanding down. I bent up the roof a bit but will have to straighten it. Next is to skin the sunroof itself and use just the outside to weld back in. More on that later. Lot's left to do and still could spend another day inside just cutting crap off. It's crazy how much you see and then next time sitting in it see more. The engine bay needs love too cutting tabs and brackets, then underneath is a whole separate few days of cleanup.

Kind of late to the party but welcome back .

Brings me back to the those days , with my lightweight m10 powered 1979 e21.

I won a lot of auto x events in that car . The engine was crisp made power at any engine speed . port velocity was always high . High compression 288 cam, single 38/38 weber down draft, headers , light weight crank ect .

Here is one of my customers vara race engines real similar to what I was running . I think its 12.0:1, 304 cam, lightened race prep crank ect .

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRKHi_KCZhw

On shorter tracks he can beat up the sidedraft cars.

On the clutch I got mine in the day from TEP . I think he called it a lightweight sport clutch kit . I don't know any other details on it . I bought a bunch of parts from Steve in a package to build that car.

Hey hdx! I followed a lot of your posts back in the day, and admired the car. Always wanted to just do the diamond race wheels. What's your setup now? Any photo's details, or tips? Thanks. Great to see your still on here.

Yes the 1.8 was a great performer with that combo. I kinda messed it up at the end of the autox days using dual valve springs(spring pressure is just excessive ie pump losses less power; going back to singles) and eventually the motor got tired (rings). We kinda let it sit a long time, but it should make a fun project to see this thing in action again.

Thanks the 77 is going to be a lot of fun .

The wheels are not my favorite but they are super light. They are actually custom Circle Racing ultra light aluminum wheels 15 x 8 . I have a few sets of alloy 13 x 8 wheels for it. And a set of 13 x 8 widened stock steel wheels for rough tracks .

Hey Brendan I looked way way back in emails for anything E21. Found a email where asked you about your wheels in 06
    15x8 with 4.25" backspacing
    What offset are they?

Having thoughts of selling our BBS 15x7 to fit wider rubber.

That's what I first thought when went to a 38/38. I still remember Dad laughing at me blipping the throttle.

Bet the lightened crank has a lot to do with the vid along with no load on the engine. Cam sounds very advance timed too which is great for early low torque. Bet the torque peak is about 3200 excellent for short tracks and off the line barely sacrificing much up top to 7k. Exactly what I'm shooting for but with a bit more torque grunt using a larger cc.

    it's a reunion of sorts I guess

Trying to make some time for the 320 this weekend again, but right now the M3 is on stands. Updating my rear roll center mod. I raised the subframe and the driveshaft is out of alignment so spacing the diff mounting down to match. Started on it tonight and hope to be done tomorrow morning. Have some more grind wheels and cutoffs for the 320.

Still gauging and discussing some mods we'd like to do. Trying to keep a list so we don't forget once it comes inside. Plan is to mount the chassis to some engine stands for a homemade rotisserie. More on that later too.

The offset 6.5mm positive on the wheels

2.3 crank wil just make it just that much better . I would spend the $ and have castillos lighten , v cut , and knife the crank .

When's the next practice event at eltoro old man?

Metal; it's what's on the menu again. Gobs of metal dust, shards, shavings. I quit weighing everything and just haul it away in 5gal buckets. I realize some may not even know what's missing in the pics cause maybe never seen a 320i naked. Some edges I've not ground off yet. Taking a break from wading myself up in the rear of the car. I take back the undercoating being hard to get out. This metal trimming and grinding is worse Every little bit counts though when your limited on hp. Had a hole drilled on the driver side to access the clutch master. I opened it up to full square so could get hands in easier. If you've ever replaced the clutch master or wondered how to do it easier make yourself an access hole. The BMW engineers laughed when mounted that sucker in that corner. Probably where they started bad habits and now apply it on newer cars.
Fuel tanks are out, and the steering column is out. Boy they really never intended the steering to be removed. That thing was made to last a lifetime with no way to unbolt it. Nothing the grinder couldn't handle. More to go.

This morning I started slow as hell with issues on the welder. Ran out of wire right away then put the wrong tip on for the wire size. Grabbed a beer and things worked smoother. The painstaking task of seam welding the rear rails in the trunk. Cause once you cut away this much metal they fall apart. I absolutely hate welding sheet. There's a reason why factories spot weld but it's not as strong. They needed love on both sides to box them back. Also seamed the lightweight brace above the rear diff that ties the wheel wells together. The rear diff brace will be cut out and removed later. Replaced by some 1" square or something. At this point I'm about 2mo ahead of schedule IMO but with vacation coming and track weekend it could get slow. If haven't figured out yet I don't like being slow.

So I was told I need to slow down. My girl said 2yrs more like 2 weeks the way your going. She insisted I need a break. She came home later today and this happened I told her I wanted it closer to the bench but then moved it to the resting place in the middle.

Just the driver floor pan right at the gas pedal mount where I cut out. And the rear trunk spots were due to neglect where I had items sitting. I had the trunk packed full of crap and it was wet, oil, residue that eventually ate the sides where I cut out. They weren't too bad but easier to me to cut away and just cover with aluminum sheet. The rear window seam driverside had a hole spot but no issues for how we plan on putting together. Light is the game. If I can leave the factory sheeting without using tubes everywhere that's the plan. Just stitch for strength. Uses tons more material, weld gas, wire. But should be light on the scales after. Right now we are only planning on a legal 4pt bar cause don't want to add back too much . I've not officially rolled it over to close inspect the underside so cross fingers. But I think we should be ok.

And here's how to clean your gravel front area after all that metal work. Sure there is the typical frag that can be swept and blown into piles. Gallons I've swept up, but here's how to comb the yard of stuff you can't see with the eye. Use an old hefty subwoofer speaker magnet on a rope. My girl came up with this idea a few years ago. Still works great. This is an old 12" sub 180oz magnet.

I'm a bit late to the party too, but WELCOME BACK!!!!! As is, I need to get on here more myself. Also need to go back through and read all the posts I skipped in here, got a bit too excited and breathing too heavy when I was reading about the S14B27. ....now if only I could get that passed smog in my own M3.....

Seeing things like this are going to be helping me get my e21 back out there as well, need to have a cool weekend to go through it and see what I need to sort my current alternator arm issues (bolt snapped somewhere), so I can run it NOT on just battery power. Also loving that your work is totally powered by beer.

Thanks! it's good to be back. You can make a S14 2.7 pass smog; it's all in how it's setup and time the cams(less overlap) . Helped a guy in UK pass, then put the cams back.

Dust off the e21 and maybe hit some events.

I rolled it over last night with Dad to see what I'm up against. Meh going to be in for some additional work. The floor pans and sub rails are all smashed and looks bad. Jacking the car and or falling on stands didn't help it any over the hard years.

Good news is as it sits on the rotisserie can roll almost completely sideways with the hubs on. Once the suspension is off it should roll just about upside down.
