    Return of an Original Gangsta

    DSC06392.jpg

Let me find some words. Ahhem what to say. First what's up my old school E21 compadres. Well I'd like to say I'm back bitches, but the car is in rough shape. This thread is being started to motivate me. No original restore project here, so if that's what your expecting just look the other way. This will be a minimalist approach if it makes it to fruition. A car is a metal frame with an engine and a seat. We need suspension to handle better than a live axle gokart so there is that part.

Well after years of sitting here it is as of today. I spent 3 months cleaning it out of spare parts since it was just used for parts storage and neglected. It last drove in 2009 illegally without a tag up and down the road for fun with friends. Few weeks ago my buddies were over. A few shots and brews later someone asks does that POS even run. I was like hell yeah man let me get the key. I hooked up a battery and pumped the gas (weber). Let the pump prime and it hit the key. The sick nasty sound of a M10 on open exhaust like a loud tractor Motor is actually in perfect shape inside but it's just tired. Needs a hone and re-ring or bored out to freshen up. Otherwise it's how I left it. 2004? gasoline in the tank. 2004 gtx oil in the pan . Has same good high oil pressure and water temp rides up and stabilizes at 180F.

Anyway Dad keeps kicking me in the balls asking about this thing that it should be brought back. So let's see how it plays out. This project plan is about 1-2yrs. It may go faster unless something in life gets in the way. The M3 takes priority since I still like to beat it to death on track a few times a year. There's the daily drivers and typical personal snafu's we all experience. So just wanted to say hmmm enough beer and maybe some E21 work.

Hey Tom, sarcasm man. Your user name looks familiar did you serve overseas? Anyways we're going to be friends I know it.

So since the start post we had several hours in the blazing sun. Now it looks like this and the motor is ready to come out. Time to assemble an engine stand from storage.

    DSC06406.jpg
    DSC06407.jpg

Least it's a good start. Probably sit for awhile and only work on it in spare time. Motor will probably come out tomorrow and live in the shop.

Driven 8 years ago isn't that bad.

I think my 323i was still sitting outside of a shop in 2001, before the owner blew it up.

Thanks guys. Some will see the user name eventually and wonder if this post is true or a hijack . It's real I promise.
No worries with Tom; hope we can hug it out man.

I looked at a few cars last year and realized I'm on a gem in comparison. Just hope I can collect up some stuff and get this project under way. Biggest hurdle right now is going to clean and strip so it can come indoors by winter. Need to know what I'm working with.

Want to update the suspension and power plant. Staying M10'ish

    - - - Updated - - -

Some car history at what she used to do. Rode hard put away wet daily and ran autox naturally. Fun times this one has lived. Wrenching on it again is surreal. I really thought the last time I'd pull it apart was to sell off her guts.

So luckily we made it easy to pull the motor over the years. M10 is no powerhouse so only needs a few bolts to the bell housing especially the 2 large ones. A removable front clip makes whipping it out a breeze. Of course this is still all the EASY stuff. The pain in my ass will be cleaning and prep of the car itself. May have to get another media blaster. First I want to try aircraft stripper and some easy off oven cleaner. Any other ideas post up I'm always open to some input tackling nasty stuff the easy way. It's terrible to have to set down my beer. Besides August heat and the humidity is kicking outside. Much nicer in the shop with AC.

Not heard of it. Is that available at paint supply only or local store? Anything is worth a try. See inside I umm hated that I used some crap bed liner and it turned out TERRIBLE. Will never do that again. Now it's a pain I hate to face, but it's coming out. That's why the inside pics look so nasty.

Need picture of your removable front end, I need to take the front end of the track car to the next step. Our car was hit in the front at sometime in it's life and stop welds are half broke lose.

Some inspirational videos to get you going.

Hey Daryl long time no post I know. I've actually kept up with your build page now and then over the years. It's still setting in going back to my roots, but seems exciting. I can't wait to tinker with this beast again. The M3 is close to sorted barring any mishaps. She's holding together and the way I drive it it's a miracle sometimes.

I like the M20 swaps, but thinking of a stroker M10 KISS style. Sent Steve a PM actually on his stroker build for some info.

Drained the 2004 castrol gtx oil and it actually isn't that bad looking. Very slippery too amazing. Bout to tear apart the engine if it rains this week. I'm sitting on some nice "stroker" parts I'd like to use.
    Anyways back to beers!

    Cheers guys it is good.

Great videos - what engine is in your M3 - does not sound like an S14 on the inside?

I love talking about this thing. Cause it is an S14. A 2.7L S14 I pieced together over 4yrs between being deployed. Assembled in my garage, and road tuned it right here in the mountains of NC. It's a street variant S14B27 with schrick 292/284 cams running 11.5:1 cut down mahle dtm pistons. The stroke crank is from John @Maxx Automotive Germany has the best 2.7 (94mm) crank kit to use for many engineering reasons. My motor also has longer rods at 147mm. Figured for a street cam topend I better make the most of the bottom. I could of went further on the topend parts and it gets extravagant. But would of been race only IMO and I like to drive it . Most question asked is what does it dyno and I don't know. It's enough.

Thanks man. Figured you guys would like that lol. Faded but not forgotten! Man I'm fortunate to get to relive this thing. I met my lady in this car and it's had plenty of good memories. I just miss the e21. So simple, raw, manual, mechanic, basic. sidebar: I've stripped the M down to bare necessities and taken some on the chin by purists. It's a collector car more now days and not suppose to track it or some shit. I came home and flogged it to death on track to have people go dude but that's an e30m3. I'm like yeah and it's meant to be beaten on a regular basis where it belongs on a track. Not at home wiping it with a diaper doing shows. My rant anyways......more beer.

So couple brews and chatting with ya guys. It's still pretty clean inside. Of course the last set of AR52's I put in long ago no idea when. Still firing but look flooded out from all that old gas and carb probably needs a good cleaning. still cool stuff. I plan to apply some things I've learned on the S14 build to put into the M10. This is about the 320is, but if you want any info on the S14 M3 just PM me. I'm open to share anything you want to ask about it.

Under the skirt she looks just as nice. Not bad at all for a lil 1.8. Well this about wraps up the least busy weekend ahead. I wanted to just get what I can done quickly since it's not bad tearing one down. I fear slower progress but never know.

The head is a "throw away" a "doorstop" it can't be milled any further and was done like that on purpose . Still good, but will have it checked by a buddy to see if still kosher. Plan to reuse it on the build. The cam may stay as well at this time but if can talk dad into another one I want a Elgin or Schrick. Goal is most grunt under the curve within 7000rpm redline. This is to hilclimb and autox. Track you'd want longer legs ie a 304 or more duration and the hardware to support that. Rockers limit this motor sadly.

She runs a custom diff, but will probably get a new gear set. Currently a 4.27 but I bought a 4.45. Something else to put together over winter. Far as any rules for classification we don't care this time it's for fun only.

BTW the rocker locks on my head are some of the first ever used publicly before people started selling them. My dad actually made these when he worked at Rockwell International. Mine were machined aluminum bar stock well before I started recommending the mcmaster car bar clamps. And then others branded the mcmaster stuff to sell as HP clamps. I should of went in business with the stuff we did; oh wait tried that too and got shut out lol. Anyways interesting tidbit of e21 history. We won't go into the strut brace. That killed me to the point I just had to laugh and grab more beer at the Vintage at the Vineyard events. Seemed every 02 owner had a "strut bar" that ours was copied before it went to market. Enough of my rants that's water under the bridge. Here to just plain have FUN and enjoy the company on the ride.

Thanks John I'll put it on the list to try. We've got some work ahead. Yeah I'm all about the E30M with an S14. I've been having a blast building that car. We'll see what can do with the E21 within a Father Son M10 budget. I do have extra S14 stuff to put into it. Dad has time being retired, and I'm extra motivated.

    Should be fun anyway.

The front clip I plan to redo cause was really a quick and dirty attach job. See back then the car was hit by a deer as it entered the interstate at speed. Not much was left and even the water pump got pushed into the motor. The frame rails were still good just after the bumper attachment. So took a sawzall right across the front. Attached the entire front clip from 4 points using 1/4-20 bolts and nuts. This was out of necessity but turns out was meant to be. Sure makes the engine and trans easier to pull. When you look at a front clip area it's mainly just a radiator support and something to hold your headlights. I plan to redo this area as I have on the M3, but still allow removal. I can take attachment point pics but it's just nothing to see really. 2 points of attachment were the scrap aluminum radiator core support which was then bolted to the bumper attachment bolts on the frame rail.

Beer leads to good ideas in this garage; more on this later cause it's how this all got started. Yeah outside sucks and reminds me of times I lived in an apartment always sneaking swaps and repairs. Finally have a house and garage/shop space to myself. I feel lucky everyday that I'm not in some gravel driveway anymore.
Outdoor wrenching would increase the beer budget for sure
