    Jay,
Do you know if it's possible to rebuild/refurb the steering box? If so, is this a service you would consider providing? I know the box has an adjustment screw on top, but some free play always returns to my wheel when it's centered (steering is tight in turns).

    Cheers.

Time to Rebuild your leaking Hydraulic Servo and your PSP.

    Pete,

Sorry, The Hydro Steering unit, is very complex inside, with lots of large ball bearings inside.
I have never seen any info on how to rebuild.
My guess is that it would take a very very long time to ware out the metal to metal contact.
If there is a gasket kit available, to stop the unit from leaking, maybe someone did a video on You-Tube on how to rebuild the Hydro.

    Good luck,
Maybe some day I will try and take one apart, and see whats inside.
    (EDIT)
Well, I took your advise and bought a used Power Steering Gear Box Hydro, and started doing research, I bought the Gasket kit from BMW, (kind of pricey).
And went through it very carefully and after 6 months, I then rebuilt my first Hydro. I now offer it as a leak repair service.See the posts below.

I gotcha. I've seen youtube animations on how recirculating ball systems work, it's fascinating. Thankfully mine doesn't leak, it's default just seems to leave the wheel a little loose when it's centered. Nothing I can't live with.

Hey next time I'm driving down to San Diego I'd love to stop by and check out your M6's!

Hey Master6, have you seen PS pump failures with no external leaking? Mine is making lots of noise, and the fluid is foamy. My brake bomb is good, and I have gone through the proper bleeding process. It goes away after bleeding and driving, but the next time I start the car it whines again. Is this a common PS pump failure?

Has anyone tried to replace the seal at the splined shaft on the hydro steering servotronic unit? Mine is a bit more than a seep right now, probably 10 - 20 drips over a weekend. I will keep adding fluid for now. Don't want to take it off until I can figure the best course of action. 250k miles now.

    Hi West Coast,

I have started a Leak repair service on the Power Steering Gear Box Hydro.
I have now repaired 7 hydros, and I also Bench Bleed (filled with ATF/or Petrosin) after the repair, and I also adjust the lash if necessary. I then ship back to you.
Here is the link for my 15 websites.
    https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...rrent-websites

Read the directions in RED to view the Captions for each photo,

Then go to # 15, then page one, for info and pricing, on the Power Steering Hydro.

I've noticed that the '88 & '89 with the servotronic steering the steering is easier. What needs to be replaced on the '87 and back in order to get the easier steering. I'm thinking the steering box, PS pump and maybe the pressure regulator that's connected to the brake bomb and the pressure lines. On son's 2 '88 models there is no servotronic electrical connection, I believe the '89 does have an electrical connection. I like the easier steering on the '88 and would upgrade my '87 depending on the parts needing swapped.

    DM,

    Thanks for the questions.
First of all you do not need to replace the following.
    1. PSP (power steering pump),
    2. Regulator
    3. Lines and hoses, (only the hoses as the are rubber and are now 30 yrs old).

You might try adjusting the lash, to a less tighter setting.
If you try and add a '89 Steering box you will need to figure out hooking up the wiring.
You will also need to scour the junk yards to try and find a steering box with servotronic, or someone parting a '89.

(EDIT), If you find a servotronic, I can fix it if it is leaking. Adjust the lash, ect.

    Good luck.
