    Smog nightmare

    Hi y'all!

So I've never had my E46 M3 fail smog before and there are no issues with the car. It failed smog today on the infamous I/M monitors not ready messages at the station. Bought an OBD scanner and confirmed same. Then drove car for while to simulate a drive cycle. No luck! Any idea how to get the darn car to pass smog?

Attached are the OBDII scan results that match the failed smog station report.

    IMG_0991.jpgIMG_0998.jpg

Any ideas how to fix this nightmare so I can pass smog and keep my M3? It runs great and low mileage and I dont want to get rid of her just to have a car that is smog ready.

After using two scanners, and trying different drive cycles over 100 miles today it still says not ready! Car is stock OEM equipped M3 with comp package no changes or mods.

I did an oil change six months ago and battery is less than 3 years old.

Are there any codes stored in the DME? You may not get much info from a hand scanner, but it is a start.

Also an Italian tune-up maybe in order if you baby the car or do a lot of city driving.

Sorry, I don't have a hand scanner so I really don't know how yours work. You have to do your homework and find out which one will work the best for you, as some can run into the hundreds of dollars.

I use a program called INPA, and it is a BMW diagnostic system, it works on an old laptop that runs windows XP and a serial port for the coms head.

    Update smog nightmare

Here is update with new scanner after completing a few BMW drive cycles.

As you can see the previous O2 and CAT not ready are gone. I am stuck still with EVAP and air fuel system not ready:

    Any ideas?

Is there a code in the DME for either system?

    And this is for a YM-06 M-3?

Remember to check the SAS, the car has to be dead cold from sitting overnight. The issue you may run into is that it is hot where you live and the pump of the SAS may not kick on. The evap system should be cut and dry, as there would be a code for either a small or gross leak detected.

No codes or DTC revealed during the drive cycle test from the scanner. It is 2006 MY M3 car. No CEL issues either. Car runs great.
I will try again. It has been very hot and humid in San Diego this past few days so hopefully it cools down again.

Secondary air monitor smog and emissions recall question

So all I/M monitors work now except for secondary air monitor after I had smog shop rescan my car. They said the evap not ready is not counted so I can ignore that monitor fortunately.

Ok so I heard that E46 BMW M3 cars had an emissions recall from BMW. Would this be why my M3 secondary air smog monitor is not ready? I did multiple drive cycles using BMW drive cycle and drove over 300 miles this weekend!

Any ideas? I have appointment at BMW dealer here in San Diego to check the emissions regarding the recall and to help me pass smog.

Make sure you ask about the airbag recall while you are there.

BTW put your vin in here for all active and open recalls: http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/conte...eoverride=true

Once the engine oil is warm...red line a day keeps carbon deposits away....

You hold it at redline for a couple of seconds, and watch the carbon blow out the exhaust. Also if the car is mostly city driven, or short trips, a long trip to the country once a month helps too.

Cool sounds wicked! Almost like a launch control blast off, right? I wish that San Diego traffic did not suck balls so much and it would cool down. The humid weather has been a pain to deal with!

Yup, pick a gear and run it out to the 8k rpm limit. Also you can do the 6.5k - 7k 2nd gear run, which leave it at range for 10-15 seconds, then shift.

Issue resolved. Passed smog today after I did more drive cycles and checked monitors with my OBD scanner. Now time to sell her to make room for my new ride!

Wow I'm surprise a lot of you don't know this, but OP must of pulled the battery recently. After you pull the battery the emission system requires you to drive for certain amount of miles before you can smog it. Or else you will get "not ready" readings like he posted.
