Flashed stock timing manipulation and a less desensitized knock map to my DME. Did a pull and found that at no point in wot was timing at 26 degrees...where as before it was set at 26 as a minimum. I feel better knowing the DME has control over the advance now.

Threads not dead. Once I get the red car in here, I plan on installed the headers, custom sec 1 / intake / possibly air box then plugs and re - dyno. Progress should move well now that everything will be kept in my own garage!

Because I was fighting those skyhigh IATs and that horrible timing map Kassel put in my DME, I started this cool air box. Now that the software is fixed, If I can keep IAT ambient, I should see mid 20's timing safely. This with the headers and a sec 1 I plan to male should put me close to 330 to the wheels I HOPE!

Once its roughed in, I will either just CF the box with resin or make it a template mold for future boxes if anyone should want one. I have a 3.5" to 4' 45 degree silicone elbow on the way and that will have a 4" velocity stack on the end with a 6inch filter covering in the box. Ill plumb cool air from the opening at the bottom of the box and also from the old ALT cooling pipe.

So right now the oil pan is off, I’m replacing the pan gasket. While I was in there I noticed that o ring on the large suction pipe was dripping oil. It’s supposed to be sealed off at the pump, so maybe at 100K it’s just old. I had the suction pipe off when I did the bearings first time that too could have damaged it.

anyway it’s just a $6 part at the dealer so I ordered it but, night shift and doubles are keeping me from picking it up haha. I plan to button up the pan on Tuesday, fill w liqumoly, complete the intake and then Toss my custom headers on. Once that’s done I can log the pulls with those programs I was talking about on m3f to see the gains.

here’s how it sits at the moment. We have 4” of snow and its been 16° so I’m not missing much outside haha

the room really is amazing, once I get the house updated I’ll have time to focus on the cars and even a Reno down there. I want more of a modern race shop too.

As far as the wiring, did you see M52powers ceiling mount? That would leave a really good bit of room in there...or you could always extend the fuse pack and relays to the E36 box like I did, it’s pretty clean and nice to be able to check them without opening the DME cubby.

i have also started on a sec 1 jig...2.5” w cats on the way!

Finally, the car is back together:

I installed a new Oil pan gasket with Hylomar this time instead of RTV. I also did the main suction pump O'ring and also the o rings at the Oil cooler hose to OFH aN- adapter. Filled it up with fresh Liquimoly 10-60 and started the car...I let it idle hot for about a half an hour with zero leaks. 78psi on start up and 21psi with oil at 205 degrees. So the car is now 100% leak free finally. While I was in there, checked everything again and it all looked great minus the RTV bits I had to clean off of the front suction screen. After this, I don't anticipate having to open the motor (bottom end) for the next 100K.

Having completed that job, I moved back to the intake. Here is where it is now. Stock elbow to a 3.5 inch aluminum HFM housing SHIFTY and I found (with built in air straightener), from there I have the 3.5 to 4 inch silicone 45 degree hose. The plan is to angle a 22 degree 4 inch pipe down behind the headlight and attach the inline air filter to bring in all the cool air the motor will need. This should remedy the IAT's I was seeing near 180 degrees.

Wait a sec, how is your stock BMW elbow from the box a 3.5” opening?? I measured mine, which is a Z3M elbow at 3.902” inside diameter. Soo I sent back the 3.5” MAF housing for a 4”. What am I missing?

So you need the 3.5 HFM because that is the diameter of the oem HFM tube. It’s essential in the correct calibration of the sensor because it’s reading are based of the 3.5 inch tube. The elbow is 3.9 at the opening, but that’s because the stock HFM housing has that rubber ring around it making the outer diameter larger, not the inner. What I did was use one of the rubber adapters from my Spectre filter to make the connection. I can get you some photos tomorrow if you want?

So I wrapped up the intake. This should alleviate my IAT issues for good.

    Stock E46M elbow -> MRP 3.5” HFM housing ->3.5” to 4” silicone 45° Elbow -> Spectre 4” in/out 5” chamber inline filter -> 4.5” tube into bumper.

Yea it worked out, the ends pulls air from here in the well...they make a 5” one with a 6” chamber, but I doubt I’ll need that. The logs will tell.

Great, I don’t see anyway water would cause an issue either, so if it logs well I can cross this off the list.

Are you going to do dual 2.5" all the way back or just section 1? Leaving section 2 stock?

Nice, I need to start with mine as well. I was hoping stock airbox would fit but test fitting yesterday was a big no.

I think I'll use this as well thanks for documenting everything.

Sec 1 will be 2.5” and at the end lowered to 2.36” to meet with Sec2. When I purchase a spare sec 2 I’ll make a 2.5” version for full, dual, 2.5.

i actually still need to make 2.5” headers though, the V1s I got are for the E46.

No oroblem, let me know if you need links. And remember, there is a 5”/6” version of the inline filter...but I don’t see how it’d be necessary.

yes if you have a link thats would be great. I did a search and couldn't find the HFM or the the inline filter your using. IF you have links for the parts you used it would be a life saver.

    HFM

    inline filter

    4”-3.5” elbow

cut 1/2 from the 3.5 end of the elbow and use it on the HFM to oem elbow connection for a tight seal.

Dropped the car and went for a drive tonight. 9 degrees out and everything felt great. When I got back, I popped the hood and used a temp gun to check the intake, needless to say, it worked like I hoped.

28-33 degrees the intake was under the hood. The HFM was 35 degrees, check vid for the other temps.

i tried to log iat with my hand held scanner but it wasn’t connection. I’ll use my laptop tomorrow and pull a few. Next step is fab a forced air duct and then I can move to the headers.

no-idea why all my photos are sideways
