    M70 JESUS Bolt tightening

So I am at the point where I need to torque down the new Jesus bolt to the crankshaft, looking at the angle torque needed to properly torque it down I can tell that no way will the flywheel pin is gonna hold. Also the manual strictly cautions against using a flywheel pin, it calls for crankshaft holding tool $$$.
    Does anyone have other suggestions?

You are going to need a 3/4 inch drive torque wrench and impact socket as well.

There is no other way. If the hub bolt is not correctly tightened the broken bolt or loose hub can destroy the end of the crank.
Also, of you think about it, the crank will never see nowhere near that much torque through the full length of the crank to the flywheel, as it takes to torque the hub bolt.
Would 400 ft-lbs between the crank hub to the flywheel hurt the crank? I don't want to find out!! As full engine torque is developed along the full length of the crank and not at the hub end!!

I have R&R several hub bolts and it is no an easy task and require the reliable hub holder, socket and breaker bar tools.
The BMW hub holder tool is designed to brace against the frame rail so at least that end is fixed if the engine is in the car if the engine is in a stand you will need a buddy and an extension for the hub holder tool.
You will need an breaker bar extension (3' pipe), high strength socket (3/4 drive is best) and since the hub bolt is a stretch bolt you never want to reuse it.

Religiously follow the torque/torque angle procedure without prolonged delay and if you loose the torque-angle registration you will want to start over with a new bolt.
Hence, I always buy an extra when I do a hub R&R so I have the oops covered.
    Good Luck

Thanks guys, I will buy an aftermarket crank holder tool. I have angle tool and a torque wrench. I have a brand new Jesus bolt.
A funny note, I was switching supercharger bracket behind the AC compressor bracket and noticed the 1993 M70 block is NOT identical to 1991 block. 1993 has different thread depth(deeper) on mentioned bracket bolts and also another unknown hole in the block behind the bracket (not threaded)...

Yes. 1/2 inch breaker bar just won't do. I bought my 3/4 inch breaker bar from Harbor Freight for $18 Not sure if I'll ever use it again but it got the job done when I was removing the crankshaft bolt on my e38 and installing the new one.

    OK, here is an update.
Sir Tools lists their crank holder tool as compatible with M62, that is wrong, M62 has a larger crank pulley. Sent them an email they never got back to me.
KTC does not make M70 crank holder
Baum Tools does make one but it is made to order at $140 plus shipping....and a long lead time!
Does anyone here has a holder they are willing to let me borrow?? I will gladly pay for shipping!

Thanks for your help! With your tip on the actual bmw part number I was able to order the bmw holder for only $57, ecs had if for $90 which is already much better than baum tools at 140, but still months lead time..
Then I came across bimmsport , they had it on sale for $49, so I grabbed it, even if there is lead time its a great price for bmw tool!

    Ohh bastards!!

    Hello,

We are sorry, but unfortunately we are unable to special order BMW tools at this time. Our listing has been updated to reflect the changes in status. We have refunded your payment in full. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

    Thank you for choosing BimmSport.

    You're welcome,
Yep! The power is in the ability to lookup the OE tool part number...as with it, tools are much easier to order.
    See attached tool list.
With this list you can lookup the Tool part number from the tool reference number listed in the repair manual

I forgot ECS sells tools. I need to remember that!!

    Enjoy.

What did you end up doing to hold the crank?

I'm in the same boat and had mistakenly assumed my M62 tool would fit but of course does not! I don't mind buying the tool if it is available?

Hi, I bit the bullet and ordered $180 M70 crank holder tool (this was close to 2 years ago), looked it up today and the damn thing is NLA! P# 83300490854

Thanks, that is very kind of you but I decided to make one....

Had this piece of 'U' channel steel in the yard for years... it's a side rail off a pre-WWII 19" equipment rack. It has plenty of leverage being about 6ft long and made the job easy!
