Hi,
Get yourself a quality aftermarket alarm installed. Newer technology, modern features, better reliability and internal electronics. The oem alarm systems for E46's and similar era cars were designed and manufactured between 10-17 years ago.
If you *must* stick to OEM then you need to gather all the required parts and bits, find a headliner that has the cutout for the sensor and swap that in and then fit in all that old technology.
Cheers, Dennis!

Hmmmm, does your headliner have the cutout? Mine came from the factory with it. I assumed (me bad) that all E46s came with the cutout.
Hi Oke,
It's up to you, the OEM alarm isn't exactly anything great and who takes any notice of one anyway!
I'll absolutely go aftermarket, smartphone control and integration, remote start, smartstart, passive keyless entry, dual zone sensors, the list goes on !
Marco - There are different roof liners depending on the spec of the car etc.
Cheers, Dennis!
Start with making sure your car is even pre-wired for the alarm. I added this feature to my wife's 09/2001 325xi: ceiling mounted motion detector, module in the trunk above the battery and the siren under the hood is all that I needed to plug in - all the plugs were there already. I had to code the alarm as a feature after those were in place.
