Let's try to keep on topic here.

Not all of these cars are going to be strictly race cars and yes we all have our opinions, but the OP has done - along with others - a good job of collecting information.

Z3M and E46 have the same orientation on the master. I don't think I tried fitting the E36 booster to the E46 master. Google images imply the E36 also has clocked bolts? I'll verify this weekend, I have a spare E36 booster and E46 master.

Hmm, maybe the E36 booster is fine. I had read something about shimming the E46 MC, anyone know about that?

    Moving this to the top.

I'm currently working on running and bending new rear brake lines for my MK60 system since mounting is complete - taking longer than expected.

Once I've verified all of the brake line fittings I'll post the information.

Would it not have been easier to acquire the 96-up brake lines?

Maybe, but now I can make them the way I want to and I don't have to remove the fuel tank.

Makes it look like you could keep the E36 booster and leave the pedal travel switch in place to hold vacuum. Anyone tried that yet?

I'll get some measurements before I plumb the MC...

I took some measurements of both master cylinders last night.

Master cylinders that were measured were:

    - E46 M3
    - E36 M3

O-ring groove surface to end of master cylinder body E46 M3 37.65 mm
    E36 M3 44.11 mm
Overall diameter of master cylinder body E46 M3 43.80 mm
    E36 M3 43.65 mm
Master cylinder bore seal plate to end of plunger E46 M3 36.34 mm
    E36 M3 35.97 mm
Push rod bore depth in plunger E46 M3 36.33 mm
    E36 M3 40.12 mm

Thanks for the measurements. Looks like I may be ordering the Z3M booster.

    Sorry it took soo long!

Another point of interest for people working on this project: pipe diameter.

I don't know how many people have paid attention to the various diameters of the hard lines, but the wheel lines are different than the master cylinder.

Master cylinder to ABS pump are: 6 mm
ABS pump to wheels are: 4.75 mm (3/16")

Sorry for any potential OT, but does anyone have the electrical pinouts for the MK60 and related sensor connectors? I'm building a harness from scratch for an 813.3 unit out of an '03 M3 and have found a few spreadsheets, but they all seem to conflict each other in some way.

Also, I notice there are two different yaw sensors available: a 6 pin (aluminum body) and a 3 pin (black body). The latter of the two seems to supercede all previous part numbers, which are NLA save for buying used. Which is the appropriate sensor to use, or can either be used? If so, what's the correct pinout? I bought connector and pins for the 6 pin so would prefer to use that.

    6 pin

    3 pin

Finally, in realoem there used to be a designation for the lateral acceleration sensor, but it no longer has a part number listed and/or is NLA. Is this part needed for either ABS or DSC operation? Part I'm talking about is shown here: https://www.ecstuning.com/Search/37146781405/ES242427/. It is mounted perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the car.

    Any help is appreciated.

I used the 1st one ... $30 on ebay. It's called a DSC sensor and has a yaw and accel in one unit. Some others have 2 separate units. As to whether it's actually required for ABS, no idea ... but for $30, why not?

Thanks gents. Any help on pinouts or a wiring diagram? Having trouble finding consistent data. As mentioned I found a couple spreadsheets but none of the info matches and am not sure which is correct.

Is there any other known booster/MC combo? The E46 MC definitely won't work with the E36 booster and it looks like the z3m booster isn't in stock in the US. Was hoping to get my car back together this week.

I haven't tried it, but the non M Z3 MK60 booster should work. It might be worth looking into as they're cheaper and more readily available.

Hmm.. didn't the Z3 3.0i have MK60? realoem shows it uses the same booster as many E36 models.

The late Z3 had MK60, but you'd still need to verify the dimensions of the M/C since they look very similar. If you were to take the complete assembly it should work. The only problem I can think of is the M/C bias.

I just ordered the z3m S54 booster, has to come from Germany as none are currently available in the US.

Does anyone know of a brake reservoir that will fit well on an OBD2 E36? The E46 M3 reservoir's clutch nipple hits the X6031 connector.

Worst case you could go with a remote reservoir.
