Diehard E39 driver.
I'd rather die or take a walk before driving an E60 or any BMW made after Y2K.

Yeah, I don't think that I'm what you would call "ready for parenthood"
And come on, if I was going to knock someone up I would at least go for someone 18

Congrats Danny! I may someday join you in Wagonhood. At this point my E39 is my 2nd car, and does daily package runs to the post office (I run an online retail store). As business expands, I'll eventually need more room than the trunk can offer. I'll either get an E39 wagon or just buy a beater van or SUV to keep costs down. So I might join you someday! Debate in my head though over 540I auto wagon or 528 stick.
Red w/ black sport trim first sucked me in when looking at E36s. It's just a fantastic look! Glad you like the wagon, any interior mods planned or are you cool with how it is? Not sure I could roll with the beige door tops/dash, but I'm a fan of beige and caramel interiors. The red/black sport trim BMW look is definitely something I want to own someday, be it E36 or E39. Nice work on the color.

Ha, I actually get a kick out of the heavy steering at low speeds. It makes the car unique, though in general I agree it's not particularly desirable. Just a quirk I sometimes find enjoyable, especially with the old school bus wheel! Feels like your navigating a gigantic barge at low speeds ;-)

I'm 23 but I look 18, if that counts lol
You should definitely get a wagon! If you want a factory manual, I'd recommend looking for a 2000 528it Sport 5-speed. That's the best 6 cylinder you can get IMO. The 2000 528it's are new enough to have proper sport seats and dual stage airbags, while still having the good old 2.8L M52tu. As long as you don't overheat the engine you can get a 528i to 300,000 miles easily. Plus for shipping/delivery purposes the better gas mileage of a 528i will be quite advantageous.
As for the interior of my wagon, I plan to do a two-tone kind of look, with a black dashboard, black door card tops, black door card handles, and black armrest. I also plan to change the seat bases to black for some extra contrast. I think that'll look pretty sweet! I initially thought about doing full black, but the interior is honestly in really good shape for a tan interior so I'd like to keep most of it. It's also nearly impossible to find black touring interiors, especially with the black cargo cover, so I don't want to do a full color change. At some point down the line once the front seats wear out I'll swap in some E38 18-way heated sport seats. They're relatively easy to find in sandbeige since nobody wants that color.
I don't really like the heavy steering at low speeds, it makes the car feel a lot heavier than it actually is. The M5 honestly feels 1000 pounds lighter due to the lighter steering, and I like that a lot. I don't have the bus steering wheel, I have the facelift M5 steering wheel in the touring.
That's temporary until I can get facelift headlights and an OEM M5 bumper. I know I could get an aftermarket bumper for way less but I'd rather buy the real thing and not have to deal with fitment issues.

IMO the 540 isn't so bad, with the big steering wheel it's weighted about what the ZHP was... just the ratio is awfully slow.
Yeah, it's a bit of a slow ratio. At speeds higher than 40mph it's perfect, but parking lot maneuvers definitely take a lot more effort. The M5 has a better ratio in addition to more assist, so it makes the car handle a lot better. I feel like the M5 steering is the way every E39 should have been from the factory— it's the most perfect steering I've ever felt in a car. It's easy and light at low speeds without being numb like the newer electric steering boxes.

This steering info is good to know. I thought something was wrong with my car.
Nice car, btw.

I thought that too when I got my first 540i, apparently it's normal to have pretty heavy steering in them. I feel like it's unnecessarily heavy, but that might be because I've always had Toyotas and Hyundais prior to getting into BMWs, so I grew up with pretty light steering.

It is usual on v8 e39/38 for steering servo valve to fail causing stiffness on lower speeds, there is a thread on E38 section about rebuilding servo,

No servo on USA E39's except M5.

Good thing you got one in a color you actually wanted. Maybe you'll keep this one! Haha.
I have to say that the MPars look great on the touring, and on that red. Congrats again!
Nice wagon! Looking good!
