Well Hello There...
DIY E38 Lady Hier...& Time For Another Write Up...
This Time We Will Be Replacing The Ignition Coils On The BMW M73 and M73TÜ Motors....
So Lets Get To It...
( Click The Pics For a BIGGER Image )
You Will NEED:
10mm Socket ( Long or Short )
1/4 Socktet
Di-Elektrik Grease
& a Towel or Wipe Away Cloth....Like Sara Jay...I Like To Use Baby Wipes For Everyhthing
You Can See The Produktion Date Listed On The Coil.
Begin By Removing The LOWER Rubber Boot From The Coil. Thes Are TWO Coils That I Bought For My M62....But Never Had a Chance To Use Them....So I Have Re-Purposed Them For M73 Use...The Coils Between The 740 & 750 are Interchangeable..
Unhook The NEGATIVE Cable From One or BOTH Batteries in Your Trunk....If You Have a 99-01', You Will Have TWO Batteries. The Top For Toys...And The Bottom For Cranking....Undo The BOTTOM Battery More So Than Anything....Just Cheat And Remove The Negatve Cable From The Frame on the Lower Battery....And Disconnect The Top Battery For Good Measure....
I Stuck The Negative Cable in a Plastic Shrouded Envelope....Just To Make Sure That It Did Not Re-Connect With Any PArt Of The Car Body As I Am Werking... ( Work With Whatcha Got! )
No Go To The Front DRIVERs Side of The Car....And Begin To Prep The Coil For Removal.
1. Unplug The Ignition Wire From Bank 2.
2. Remove The Plastik "Gap" Shroud.
3. Unplug The Ignition POWER Wire Loom Harness From The Coil.
4. Unbolt the TWO, 10mm Nuts Securing The Coil in Place.
5. Remove and REPLACE The New Coil in Reverse Order.
6. Bank #2, ... DONE! ....Move On To Bank #1 (Pass. Side)
Woooooow....STILL The Original Coil from 00'....17 Years And STILL Going....Wonderful Products From Germany.....These New Coils Were Manufaktured in 2012!
When you are Putting Everything Back Together.....Use Some Di-elektrik Grease To Keep Everything Lubed & Supple !
Now Moving Over To Bank #1....The Removal Process Is Just The Same.....The Only Difference Is... You Will Need To Dosconnect The MAss Air Flow Sensor.....And Remove The 20 Pin Diagnostic Konnekter, In Order To Access The Last Coil.....After That...It is SMOOTH Sailing !!!
Repeat Above Steps ..
Once You do Alle That...Hunni You are DONE!!!!!
I Hope This Helped Some of My M73-V12 Peeps....Sorry M62-V8 Owners...Nuthing For You Today.....
Anyhoo, Hoped You Enjoyed....
Your Tech Savvy E38 Gal,
Miss BimmerLV
xoxo
Great write up! One note of caution for M73 folks buying new coils... Do NOT buy the Bosch part. Even though realoem gives that part number and the Bremi part number, the Bosch coils are square and do not fit the 750's brackets!!
