I just found a signature in the factory paint of my trunk lid which was hidden under the roundel; I've confirmed the paint on the entire trunk lid is original, and you can clearly see the signature was added before the paint was cured:
I know each E34 M5 had the builder's signature hidden somewhere on the car, but has anyone heard of this sort of thing on an E36 M3? Did the E28 M5s - or any other hand built early M car - come with a builder's signature as well?
I've heard a story from a reputable source that my car had some special hand assembly, and I'd like to determine if this signature firmly corroborates that information.
I've got #45 here locally that I service, it's coming in shortly for some refreshening. See if I can't pop off the roundel and have a peek.
I hear lots of E36 have them behind one of the front door panels

-Did you hear that?
That would be really appreciated - and if there's a signature there I'm sure that car's owner would appreciate seeing that as well. If we could find a few members with European specification E36 M3s from Europe or Japan to check theirs that would be very helpful, as this might be specific to this run of 45 cars.
First I've heard of that - I'll have a look at the E36s in my local junkyard the next time I'm there.
I also have my personal 97 Euro, I'll have a look tomorrow.
I'll check too - car comes back from the shop next week.
Paul, does your E36 have a window for the VIN in the front windshield glass?

Well, no special signature under the roundel on the 94 CDN spec.

My old '95 E36 320i had one under the front badge. My '96 M3 doesn't though.
