Limp mode when idling on drive.

I decided to post this as a new thread, since it might not be related to the red oil light blinking that I had going on.

When I was at a stop sign idling on drive, the car went on limp mode (i.e. safe mode). The manual said, that the car was stuck in the 3rd and 4th gear. I turned the car off and when I turned it back on it was gone. However, this has occurred three more times after that, each time when I was at a stop sign idling on drive...again, it goes away after I restart the car. It does not happen when I'm in park or in neutral. However, if I'm on drive, and I wait long enough, then it goes on safe mode.

Could a possible low idling speed cause this, since it only happens when I'm stopped in drive? My current idling speed is at 550 rpm, and I was thinking of increasing it to about 700.

Any ideas why this could happen?

    Thanks!

The first step in diagnosing any issue with a modern, electronix-laden car like a BMW is to scan the engine computer for codes. The SES/CEL light doesn't have to be on for codes to be present. That light is on only when there's a code related to emissions.
