2004 235i base model. Automatic Transmission) 107K mile
LUK LF-20 just broke it's shaft and shafted me so, now I am searching options for purchase. I've read that in the past few years the LF-20 is more durable than previous years. Also, I'm not too interested in the LF-30 as from what I've read steering is not as tight comparitively.
I can't drop $400 to $500 for new OEM so, I am seeking input in the following optons for LF-20 replacement:
1) Used. I have one lined up that's already pulled $75 with 30 day warranty.
2) Cardone brand: $125 used. $100 remanufactured.
3) Ebay: Various chinese made ranging from $50 to $100 1-year warranty
4) This one: http://www.1aauto.com/bmw-power-stee...=514664&y=2004
Used for $75 unless the Cardone is a reman genuine LUK. Careful with the pulley, it's plastic.
Try fcpeuro for an OEM pump. A pump fails because of the owner failed to perform maintenance such as a fluid flush.
Also, you should replace the reservoir as the filter in the bottom gets gunked up. Buy a genuine ZF reservoir. The hoses that attach to the reservoir need to be replaced, too.
i would go either used if on limited funds if the condition of the pump itself is in good working order and everything is tidy. nothing wrong w/ going used depending on the situation. otherwise you could get a new oem pump from fcpeuro for about 250. they also sell the cardone manufactured one as well for 125. shipping should be free but the plus buying from fcpeuro is the parts come w/ a lifetime guarantee. they are pretty good folks to work with. definitely would consider getting a new reservoir if you are already doing this as the screen filter usually gets pretty dirty and not worth removing to clean. that will run you about 20 new. they do price matching as well. i just placed an order today w/ them. good luck.
cheers,
larry
I ended up finding a used pump fro $50 pulled with 100k miles on it. I purchased a new oem ZF reservoir and both hoses that attach to the reservoir. Also, purchased this tool: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...-tool-cta-3466 which works great.. disconnected it in less than a minute and without removing headlight assembly. The person I purchased the PS pump from gave me a 3 month warranty and is a local Ebay seller. He said even if it's out of warranty he'll replace it either free or half the price.
