Installed vs90_piaredist
Installed net framework 4.5.2 or higher
Plugged K+DCAN Cable into laptop and let it install the latest drivers on its own
Device Manager -> USB serial port properties -> port settings -> advanced -> change port number to com9 and latency timer to 1
Opened C:\EDIABAS\BIN\EDIABAS.INI with notepad and checked for "Interface = STD:OBD" and in TCP settings set "Port=6801"
Opened C:\EDIABAS\BIN\OBD.INI with notepad and checked for "Port=com9"
Installing Rheingold
Unpacked to C: \ Rheingold, unzip and copy SQLiteDBs to Rheingold \ SQLiteDBs \
Run C: \ Rheingold \ TesterGUI \ bin \ Release \ ISTAGUI.exe. If it asks for a license, copy from the file License.txt which is in the Rheingold directory. Enter the number 1 in the ISIS, ignore the error.
Ran INSTAGUI.exe
VCI Config tab and selected Ediabas standard settings (ediabas.ini)
Selected operations and then read out vehicle data and selected complete identification
shows me ERROR
The vehicle could nto be identified. Pleae check the access to the vehicle and check whether the testing-analysis-diagnosis has been activated.
I have tried this on 3 different cars and they all gave me the same error.
2004 BMW 330ci
2010 BMW 328i
2008 BMW 328i
can anyone help me figure out what i did wrong?
Ignition on right? Can even do it engine running.
Everything looks right, I blame the cable.

yea it was key on
2 questions:-
1. Did you unblock the zipped Rheingold package prior to extracting and installing it?
2. Are you attempting to run it on a DELL laptop? (FYI I have Rheingold running on 3 Machines - Windows 10, Windows XP Pro and Windows XP Home but it will not run on my DELL m65 XP Pro machine, which has identical specs to my HP Pavilion laptop (2Gb RAM, 320Gb HDD). The fact that the DELL is a completely new install on a brand new HDD leads me to believe that the issue is with one or more of DELL's system drivers as I have successfully previously run INPA, DIS, PA Soft, SSS Progman and a few other BMW specific programs on this machine).
1. when i went to properties, there was no unblock button.
2. the laptop im using it on is lenovo
Do you have INPA? Would be easy to check with INPA that the cable is working.
no i don't have inpa.
Make sure you have BMW Standard Tools installed.
... Wait, did you install ediabas 7.3.0 from a standalone installer, not part of Standard Tools 2.12??
If so, that is a modified ediabas for use with a custom ista P loader only. It will not work with ISTA D Standalone.

yea i didnt use bmw standard tools and yes i had ediabas 7.3.0 standalone installer. so how exactly do i install it and make ista d work? i have ista p standalone too. will installing bmw standard tools and having the ediabas 7.3.0 installed mess up any of the programs?
I switch between the ediabas created by the ediabas7.3.0 installer and the ediabas from Standard Tools 2.12. (Edit the folder names as needed)
To make it work, you must use the ediabas from Standard Tools 2.12

i see, ill test it as soon as i can, thanks for the help guys!
ok so i did what you guys asked. have not tested yet or anything, just wanted to get more info before i modify ediabas.
so my steps:
1. renamed Ediabas 7.3 that i installed from standalone installer to Ediabas 7.3.0
2. Installed ediabas from bmw standard tools 2.12. when installing i chose STD:OBD, COM9, Checked usb to serial. <-did i do this right?
so now my other dilemma
so i opened up ediabas config file. what modifications do i do to make it work?
my TCP is currently
RemoteHost = LMUC203404
PORT = 3000
do i change it to
RemoteHost = 192.168.68.40
Port = 6801
any other stuff i need to do? obd config file is already set to com9 also
Make sure it's set up as "Interface = STD:OBD"
It doesn't really matter on the IP addresses or remote host, since you will be configuring your ISTA / D to run Ediabas directly through OBD profile (unless you are running in Virtual Machine?). Just make sure your cable is COM9 in Device Manager now.

also, do i have to run ifhsrv32 before running ista/d?
ok, so i did all that and tested it on an 2010 328i and i still get the same error.
The vehicle could not be identified. Please check the access to the vehicle and check whether the testing-analysis-diagnosis has been activated.
did i do something wrong? could it be because i didn't install everything from bmw standard tools 2.12? i unselected all the other programs and installed only ediabas.
What version drivers did you install for your cable? The newest drivers cause issues with chinese made OBD cables with FTDI. You need 2.10.00 or 2.12.00 (the older versions of these from about 2 years back).

Hi deadremix,
From what I've read in your OP, looks like you've installed the same kind of ISTA/D standalone package that I have, so here's what I've learnt wandering through the various directories.
The main ISTA/D archive deploys a Rheingold directory which already contains a minimal Ediabas install (C:\Rheingold\Ediabas), and it's that install that ISTA/D is configured to use, so the supplemental Ediabas install (from the Ediabas 7.3.0 MSI file) comes as a duplicate in my understanding, but adds some features as it's a complete Ediabas version.
The problem is then to know which of both version is actually used by ISTA/D when it starts.
Here's what you can try :
- uninstall supplemental Ediabas altogether (right click/uninstall on Ediabas MSI file if it's the one that's currently installed)
- in your main ISTA/D deployment directory, rename C:\Rheingold\Ediabas\BIN to C:\Rheingold\Ediabas\OLD_BIN
- reinstall Ediabas MSI package, changing its install path to C:\Rheingold\Ediabas\ during installation
- this will create a new C:\Rheingold\Ediabas\BIN directory containing all Ediabas binaries + DLLs + INI files
- the rest of Ediabas package (docs, helper files, sim files, etc ....) will be installed in C:\EDIABAS as usual
- modify EcuPath parameter inside C:\Rheingold\Ediabas\BIN\EDIABAS.INI to C:\Rheingold\Ecu
Then, you can redo your other settings :
- C:\Rheingold\Ediabas\BIN\EDIABAS.INI
Interface = STD:OBD
You don't care about anything TCP or Ethernet here as you'll be using an USB K+DCAN cable if I'm correct (=> nothing to do with a network connection).
- C:\Rheingold\Ediabas\BIN\OBD.INI
[OBD]
Port=Com9
Hardware=OBD
You also don't have to care about ifhsrv32, which is a network proxy for Ediabas. It's used when ISTA (or any BMW diag software needing Ediabas to connect to car), is run from another PC than the one where Ediabas itself is installed, and "discusses" remotely with it over a network.
Guess it's not the classic case for DIYers
Hope this will help solve your situation.
Anyone else feel free to correct me if I've mistaken somewhere.
David, I installed the package below on a DELL Latitude D531 with the same memory and hard drive...everything seems to be working...just haven't tried it on the car yet:
- Ediabas 7.3.0,
- BMW Coding Tool,
- BMW ISTA-D 3.54.11 (ISTA+ Rheingold) Standalone,
- BMW ISTA-P 3.58.0.500.
I remembered reading of your issue with the hard drive so; I upgraded the BIOS to A12. I then partitioned the hard drive in two with Windows 7 Ultimate 32bits and INPA with EasyDIS (90GB) as well as the other with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits, and the ISTA-D/ISTA-P suite (210GB). I am now planning a memory upgrade since it seems I can get 4GB out of Hong Kong for under $20 including shipping.
When you entered the license info, was your system online? I am going to give the DELL one last crack now that I have repaired the motherboard, fitted a new processor and ugraded to a 320Gb HDD.
No, that computer wasn't online; however, according to the seller as well as this site: http://cartechnology.co.uk/printthre...id=5811&page=9 it has something to do with lock files. I checked the unzip file, and it wasn't lock, nor is each of the unzipped content of SQLiteDBs locked either. I will try the one click method.
- - - Updated - - -
Tried the one click method and it didn't work...time to start over, wipe the hard drive, and install again...the path messed up, originally, the content of SQLiteDBs wasn't in the folder and extracting to the folder later won't work.
Maybe that whole "unblock" nightmare is caused by Microsoft SmartScreen technology.
Just in case :

Wiping hard drives? Reinstalling Windows?
I run the ISTA-D standalone from a 64gb microSD on a Windows tablet, or sometimes I put the SD into my laptop and run it from there. From Windows 8.1 64-bit, to Win7 64-bit, to Win10. The standalone version doesn't get any easier. If you extracted correctly, Rheingold ISTA is fine... look at your connection settings, or your EDIABAS installation or configuration.
