After trading my 1997 M3 Sedan for my 2000 540iT, I knew I was going to want something else for autocross and PDX. I thought about going to the obvious answer, but I realized I wanted to stick in the BMW family. After toying with a few other ides, I decided that a 2.8L Z3 would fit the bill. I found a 2000 BMW Z3 2.8L with a 5 speed for sale locally that was within my budget and jumped on it. The car was not pretty and needed a few things, but was a good starting point. It came with TC Kline coilovers, some generic looking aftermarket Enkei wheels, and a Fast and Furious head unit. I started by fixing some suspension items and the stereo. I replaced the front suspension arm, replaced the motor mounts, upgraded the worn bushings to poly ones, and replaced the steering inner and outer tie rods. The stereo was replaced with a period correct looking Continental unit that has bluetooth and USB support. After that, the car received a good detailing (wetsand in some areas that had been repainted, polish, and wax) and the headlights were polished. Here's where it stands now:
Next on the list is to get a nice set of lighter wheels (17's, with some stickier rubber), do some work on the rear suspension, change all the fluids, add a roll bar, and drive it a lot.
After about six months, I have finally gotten this car sorted.
I replaced the subframe bushings, FCAB's, rear arm bushings, sway bar links, transmission mounts, RSM's, VANOS seals, brake calipers, added headers, Kassel tune, Achilles oil pan baffle, changed the brake fluid, transmission fluid, differential fluid, Kosei K8R's with Hankook RS3's, and some other maintenance items. I have taken it to a bunch of autocrosses this year, and took it out on a track day at the FIRM (video below):
This car has been working great. Next up for it are a better roll bar, sway bars, better pads, and a more supportive seat.
Spent another year messing with this car and got it back on the road. Reinforced the rear trunk floor and did a bunch of other jobs. Snapped these pics today.
Real nice. Usually not big on on green cars, but that's a nice dark green (plus it's a Z4).
It is a classic combo with the tan top.
Nice wheels! I have the same ones on my 328.
Thanks! Was a pain getting the center caps resolved. Fortunately, found the ones that fit inside the Turner wheel spacers. Definitely improves the look.
Are you running spacers?
You might be able to just insert the cap into the rear wheel hub. I just shoved mine into the wheel spacers.
Ah, guess I don't need any special size then
They were for an E53 X5.
Looks pretty nice
