Looking up the part numbers in RealOEM it shows your and my part numbers are exchangeable retrospectively! So appears there is no difference between EURO/US EML/DME modules. Which leaves just the EGS as Wuffer suggested. I'll see if i can find a pic of mine. Do you have your part number for EGS?
Do you have any schematics for the euro 850i (wiring for E-M-S switch)? All I have are US schematics. I can't imagine the difference amounts to much and easily modified.

.. your DME and EML are the same as EURO. Only older/newer versions. (the VIN tells, the DME are from a 06/91 E31)

I think this is for EURO and US.
If you has an EPROM burner an 32KB EPROM, you can burn my EURO "CR" BIN. Maybe first easyer then changing wiring. I have only C27512 EPROM - but these are also working with BinStacker. (funktion in TunerPRO)

here are my backup computers. For the future :-)The CH EGS is from a E32 750i M70 - works also fine in the E31.
Unfortunately, these schematics show only the US A/M switch (page 2460.0-03 in the 91 manual).
Is your E-M-S switch a momentary switch (US A/M switch is momentary) or is it more like a toggle switch (holding its position in selected mode)?

I do have an EPROM burner somewhere and maybe some usable eproms.
On further research it does look like the EGS are different. Need schematics to determine how easy to do a swap...

My E-M-S is momentary.
I think CW an CH is comparible.
My car has stock a CR - it runs fine with the CH from the E32.

CH/CW/CR an in my opinion "Alpa Codes".
I know this from Opel cars. Many car componants has this 2 letter codes. With this code you can better dicide the parts.
For example: there are many variants of dash instruments - for every engine an special insturment.
In the produktion and later in ordering after a defekt, the two letters make it easier to find out the right part.
At Opel cars, the Bosch Motronic ECU/DME have also Alpha Codes.
I have seen, that the first letter tells the version of the motronic. For example: Motronic ML4.1 has Fx ans Motronic M1.5 has Gx. These Gx and Fx ECUs are compatible.
But in these logic are not all ECU. For example: Motronic 1.5.2 has GM - and not compatible wirh the the other Gx.
In the Bosch ecat you can see:
CH - GS1.21
CR - GS1.22
I think GS is "Getriebesteuerung" (transmissioncontrol). Maybe 1.21 and 1.22 is a version. At my car CH and CR works.
I have read in the 5/90 E31 US user manual, that the converter lockup in "A" mode in in the 3rd and 4th gear aktiv.
On my car the lockup is only in the 4th gear. The car shifts above 80kmh in the 4th gear. Above 96kmh, the lockup is on.
The lockup turns off, when the speed is below 90kmh.
How works the lockup in the US car? I am intrested to test the CW EGS bin in my car. Can somebody copy the chip to bin file for me?

I think the US Auto 850i has an other rear axle ratio. I think the US Version is shorter. Right?

I have check my E-M-S switch.
The connector have 10 pins. 6 are in use.
2 for illumination. Brown ans gray/red. Pins 1 and 2.
There is an second brown for the E-M-S signal. Pin 8.
Pin 7 is M
Pin 4 is S
Pins 10 is E
I dont check the colors for E-M-S. In the cable are yellow/blue yellow/green und yellow/white.
I think the yellow/white is for S. Check your US connector - maybe there is the yellow/white?
After studying the electrical trouble shooting guide I believe these are the wiring changes in the EU 850 to accommodate an E-M-S switch (vs. 91 US 850i). I also came across a schematic for an erly 5-series that is wired exactly this way too! There is some confusion/error regarding where the E and M switch wires go, the troubleshooting guide indicates to the instrument cluster as they do in the early 5-series but in my 91 850 they go to the EKM and I doubt it is different in the EU model 850 (I think this is an error in the documentation). Schematic below shows these going to the EKM. These 2 connections indicate 'M' and 'E' in the instrument cluster, S is commanded by some other means.
I picked up an inexpensive E-M-S switch from an E32 which I'll adapt to fit and plan to pursue this further, just not clear where I'll end up or when since I'm knee deep into my 760i right now. First job is to determine if my existing EGS will support S4 by simply grounding EGS pin 4.
Same colors are shown in this schematic except I think
E = Yellow/Blue
S = Yellow/Green
M = Yellow/white
Ground = Brown
illum power = Grey/Red

No, I'm afraid not. Grounding Pin 4 didn't do anything in my car.
My thinking now is to modify the transmission lever position switch (when in D) to fool the car to think it is in S3 and automatically switch back to economy (4th gear) once I've reached cruising speed. This looks easy to implement and would basically automate what can be done manually... moving the gear lever between 3 and D at 50mph (or there abouts).
Sorry I don't have any EGS bin files. I've got so many other projects this one is dragging...
