Always thought the convertible that never was would be awesome.
Anyone here own one of these?

I like it, but don't think there are any in the states.
Yes there are... a while back, there was a guy down in LA with more money than sense (or so it seemed) and he was selling off a bunch of toys from his "collection"... a convertible E31 was part of that bunch. Blue one

The main issue BMW had was flex with the convertibles after the top was gone.

Love the red konig convertible. If the 8 came with a convertible, you wouldn't see too many of the old sl500.
This is not a new topic I was wondering if anyone was interested in doing it besides me.
The flex can be helped in a number of ways. If your going to race the car do not turn it into a convertible.
But a nice chrome or powder coat roll ball would be cool and help with the flex then you could add an X brace underneath the car as well. Neither is hard to do.
In south Florida I have run a vert for years the top was down 95% of the time and I rarely put it up. Even if I parked it I had a cockpit cover that kept medium rain out and once the rain stopped and sun came out dried right away.
Love verts

Wouldn't mind testing a roll bar on a experiment I'm trying to complete, I don't use the back seats anyway. Almost bought one a while back from some guy with a Auto Spa in Canada,) I'm sure it was made for another car and fit nicely.
Looks good and I think if it was custom fit for the 8 it would look very good! Thanks for sharing.

The convertible definitely looks good -- I've seen photos before, but never seen one of the cars in person. On the flip side, the idea of adding a roll bar defeats the entire purpose of a car designed around the absence of the B-pillar. The car probably loses a huge chunk of its torsional rigidity if you chop the top, but the point was already made about not doing it to a car geared at higher performance. For me, the pillar-less coupe is probably 90% of the overall appeal of the E31's style.
Cheers, John

Live, Love, Life, Amazing...
I've seen one of the convertibles built by BMW in person. It was very cool and weird. (Also the only E31 I've seen up close with cloth upholstery.)
Notice how the trunk lid is elongated even beyond the fuel filler...overall I was enamored with this car. It even had tire pressure monitoring!

Old threat.... but the first one and the last one still exist. Seen them in a private collection last weekend and they are for sale ...... but inner circle (no advertising).
Difficult to put a value on them, unique but not a real nice convertible conversion (quality not that good) and quite some work on them (cosmetics).
But... two !
