I'd change out the intake helical gear as well, it contributes to the backlash.

I changed all that stuff some time ago and it didn't help. Fingers crossed for you but somewhat pessimistic!

Jaker, don't just say that, you have to tell them the rest of the story about what ended up happening.....

The point is that that other stuff is now all fixed and the valvetrain/Vanos noises are all still there.

we could all benefit from one of these... I want an electronic one with a signal I can record and or amplify... Wonder if those are made?

I could use some of my forensic audio engineering skills to isolate sounds etc

    Update:
Slow day in the shop so I was able to wrench on the e30. Installed new cam sprockets, chain, chain guide, splined shaft, spring plate and all thrust washers.

    Noise is gone!!!

Only thing I noticed when reinstalling was the new chain is a lot tighter then the old one, other than that I couldn't see anything major wrong with the old parts that would cause the noise.

Possibly the old chain was over stretched and the upper tensioner couldn't keep it tight enough??

Anyways I'm happy I didn't spend a bunch of money for nothing.

    Interesting.

    Though, chains don't stretch.

Nope, they don't. They wear. Big difference.

No difference. Chains get longer. Nobody cares why.

You should care why - they "get longer" in that example because your sprocket teeth are worn and provide excess wear. You can replace the chain again and have the same issue.

Understanding why things happen is not bad.

You're wrong. Technically the term "stretched" is not incorrect on a worn chain. The total overall length is greater due to wear.

Sure, except nothing about the parts stretch. Bolts stretch. Shoe laces stretch. Chains do not stretch - they wear.

Semantics, but understanding why is part of critical thinking.

    KorreCT.

An engineer would NOT use the term stretch in this situation.
    Also,
the rattle issue likely makes the car sound "meaner".

Actually the noise makes it sound like a POS. I hate it but haven't been able to find a solution for my car.

Thanks for the tip. That was one of the 1st things I did way back when. Maybe it's worth another go!

    Well this is encouraging!

Can I ask which chain you're speaking of? I'm assuming just the chain between the cams and not the one from the crank since that would require removal of the head to get the front cover off.

I might just bite the bullet and order up these parts as well.

I don't mean to demean anything being said here, just relate my own experience. My cam to cam chain was a brand new Iwis chain when I built the engine. The noise was present from the 1st start-up.
