I searched and I find posts where others have used the e32/e34 vented rear rotors with upgrading the rear trailing arms, but is it possible to use the vented rear brakes with the stock trailing arms?
thanks,
Cfisher
Yes, works with stock trailing arms.
I make E23 parts.

Thanks very much!
I think I'm the only one to have done trailing arms so far.

Which rotors are used when going big brakes on the rear? With the 540/740 rear calipers the e28 needs the 540 rear rotors. Does the E23 care?
You need to make sure you are getting the rotors from the E34 540 and not the E32 740,750. The calipers and carriers however are identical on both.
Here is a great reference page that shows all the available options-

Is this true for the E23? I know about the need to use the 5-series rotors on the 5-series cars. I guess I could try it, I have a set of the brakes available and if the E34 rear rotors are the correct part they will fit. If not, they will go on my 5 and I'll look for a set of rears for the e23.
That is not necessarily correct.
I used the 740/750 E32 rear rotors, with the 740 trailing arms (which are the same part numbers, difference is the bearing vs a bushing)

Hate to resurrect a year old thread, but wanted to keep all the information in one thread if possible.
Could anyone verify that they used the e32 740i /750i rotors on the stock e23 trailing arms when doing this upgrade?
I ordered a set of the e34 540i BMW rotors and they DO NOT work with the trailing arms on my e23. They go on the hub just fine, but the brake carrier will not fit over the rotor. The section of the rotor where the parking brakes are needs to be "deeper".
I'd appreciate it if someone could check their records and post what they installed.
Thanks!
The hat offset for the 540 vs. 740/750 rear rotors is different, I'm willing to bet you need the E32 rotors.
To be clear, I used the 740/750 rotors/calipers on 740/750 trailing arms-essentially the entire assembly, except the flange for the axle was changed to the E23 part.
The trailing arm part number is the same for E23/24/28/32/34, the differences are in the flanges & bearings.

I bet you are right Jay. Thanks for your input. I'll order a pair of 740i rear rotors and give it a try and report back.
I just wanted to report back and let everyone know that the 740i rear rotors fit the rear hubs of my e23 and the 540i/740i rear calipers and carriers went on without any issue. So I would say for an e23 the 740i rotors are needed (part #34 21 1 162 967) and as stated earlier for the e24/e28, the 540i rotors are needed.
How much of a difference does this mod make? How much larger are the rotors? Just curious.

I found it to be a very nice upgrade, the larger rear rotors and pistons in the calipers significantly reduce nose dive on hard braking.

Rotor size is only part of the story.
The pistons on the E32 calipers are also bigger.

Scouted the pick and pull and bought some calipers and brackets of a '93 740il for future upgrade. Thanks for the insight guys.

Makes a nice difference, rode in a car with this mod and did a big time brake pull down from around 140mph. Far more even braking as stated.
