    Center Support Bearing replacement

It's been a while since I have posted, moved into my first house!! Anywho... I started getting the drive shaft vibration on acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear.
Figured it was the center support bearing so I parked Black Betty until I could drop the exhaust and take a look...

While I was under there I noticed the Idler arm bushing was shot, so looks like I will be fixing that also..cheap enough

What else should I do while exhaust is out?

-The guibo is new (replaced ~8mo ago)
-The shifter is fairly sloppy... is there rebuild kit offered or do I have to purchase individual grommets/bushing for shifter linkages?
    - I would really like to get rid of the cats, or just get a full exhaust cause that would have to net a fair amount of weight loss!

Exhaust dropped... holy crap the exhaust is heavy!

The center support bearing has separated from the mount on one side... that def. was the culprit!

So, I am going to get around to replacing the guibo and probably the csb on my 535I in a few months. I see a few tiny cracks on the guibo but it is still pretty flexible.

As far as I know, my shifter is fine, but I have no other Getrag frame of reference. Are there a couple of shifter parts I should just change on principle while in the neighborhood ?

I would say the parts I listed above would be good,

I had the same issues and took the time to upgrade the shifter itself to the e60 sport shifter, only around $40 and dramatically shortened the shift throw, along with all new items listed above as well. It's also a good time to replace the tranny mounts as they too can add play if worn.

*another e34 535i Black Betty! I call mine that too! Good luck!

Thank you! The e60 shifter upgrade sounds nice, although I may just do the refresh and call it done... is this a common mod?

    The main culprit...

CSB had separated from it's stamped-steel mount.. only like 2 spot welds were hanging on for dear life

After I dropped exhaust I also pulled it apart at the junction between the cats and resonator because that joint was loose and the bolts were quite degraded see them in the pic above...

I also used the 'bolt the driveshaft to a 1x4 ' trick to pull d-shaft apart and get CSB off...

So... here is the list of items to purchase... any input is welcomed.

Thanks for this thread. I'm going to have to do this soon too. What is the 1x4' trick to get the driveshaft apart?

If you'll notice on the transmission end of the drive shaft I drilled two holes though a piece of scrap 1x4 and bolted drive shaft to it in order to break the bolt loose holding the drive shaft together at CSB (directly behind the center U-Joint)

Oh I see now. The 1x4 is just to keep the driveshaft from turning as you wrench on the collar nut. Thanks

    Update:

So I received all of my goodies from Pelican Parts- CSB, Shifter Refresh Kit, Idler arm bushing

Install went fairly easy except for getting exhaust back up under the car without any help!

Now I have the same very low speed oscillation that was there from before. I will post a new thread for this as it was what caused the CSB to prematurely fail. At any speeds above 10mph the driveline is perfectly smooth.. Any ideas...shoot away. From what I have read it is D-shaft misalignment of some sorts... Low RPM +Acceleration+moment(time of highest torque).

    back from the dead!

I am going to be getting into this on the new 540 and figured I'd see if there was an answer for this "oscillation".

I assume it was the U-Joint seizing which would require a new driveshaft. had that done on my last 540 and was about $550.00 and I think I;d probably be better off just doing a whole new driveshaft than having all the work done to replace the CSB only to find it wasn't the problem.

The only thing not mentioned in the thread was did you pre-load the CSB by pulling it forward before torquing the bolts ? This I think is done to keep slight forward tension on the shaft so it's not sloppy forward to back.. is that not correct?

Yes, forward tension. Preload centre mount at right angles to propeller shaft 2 ... 4 mm in direction of travel. This is from E36, but same applies for E34
