    LOL

    Dennis,

I simply assumed, wrongfully that you enjoyed the intoxicating effects of a good spirit from time to time. I thought you might have been turned off by the myths and misconceptions or the odor or the stereotypes of a "pothead", and that's why you were so vehemently opposed to the idea. I myself partake 2-3 times a month with some friends and love it.

Anyone I've ever gotten to try it has been nervous at the idea and a little nervous at first but after the first 10 minutes of uncontrollable laughter, they typically relax and enjoy the lack of worry for the daily grind.

I hope I didn't come off sounding like you were crazy for not trying it. I just see alcohol and thc, in moderation and in the right setting (for the record, since legalization in my state, crime is way down) as a socially acceptable way to unwind.

I'm not a fan of anyone not an adult using the stuff. Studies have shown that in adolescents, brain connections are permanently altered as the brain develops. Where in an adult, no such lasting effect is noted. So the short-term memory loss is just that, short term. As in, the next morning, you're back to normal. The stuff you forget is the same most people could care less about the next day. With todays commercial edibles, you can fairly control the dosage and thus not get completely stoned if one wishes to aimply enjoy a small buzz like one would receive from 2 cocktails. All without the aggressive tendency an excess of alcohol can produce. Our American Drug enforcement agency has come out recently admitting that for 40 years, they've lied about Marijuana being a gateway drug and with some other statements they've pushed in the war against the stuff. Like a parent telling a child their face will stay permanently cringed up with a tongue out if they make that face. It had an effect on the stigma. So did any typicall stoner you ever met at a party or on the street. I never want to see another hacky-sack for the rest of my life or dreadlocks on a caucasian. I'm not a fan of "stoners" like I'm no fan of alcoholics.

Enough of this. We'll get you a good scotch and talk cars. I'm not trying to be a pusher. I just wanted to suggest that it's not evil or wreckless and with decriminalization the one negative I always had with thc, the paranoia that is associated with pot is no longer an issue. Now it's just fun.

This thread slipped a bit off and I'm to blame. I apologize.

All in all, we'd all have a good time regardless of how we self medicate.

Denigod--- want to sell your car? I've got a buyer.

We can discuss it over a beer, spirit or brownie the next time we meet up. How's that baby girl of yours doing? Getting any sleep?

2-3 times a month?! Where do you find your self-control?!

Stereotypes were put in place by the government. I am 24, no college degree, 2 kids, and a better job than anyone in my graduating class. I can honestly say it's due to the herb, and a heavy dose of TOOL. Put those two together in any situation, and you can achieve greatness. Now it's all about the kids, and the blood/sweat/tears that comes with supporting a family. Love it. Anyone who is questioning their value in life needs to experience bringing a life into this world that is 100% dependent on YOU.

Anyways...what am I doing here? I don't have a touring, but the topic obviously caught my eye. Carry on with your meet scheduling!

    Hi

Plattus - No problemo! I'm not miffed or anything like that from what you've mentioned, you can relax there! It's one of those things, everyone finds it 'easy' to assume things about other people based on what they've seen/heard/have in society and not just recreational stuff like this, but lots of other things too. It's when someone doesn't do or believe the 'general consensus' that many will then raise an eyebrow etc. Some people then 'give in' in order to appear they're then 'one of them' etc, peer pressure and all that. Other's don't and just continue to do what feels right for them. I've just never ever had the 'urge' to try anything except for alcohol. Back at school, I never had the 'urge' to do what other kids were doing, I also never had the 'urge' to go down a route which other's did and who are either locked up or no longer breathing. I've researched for myself what the effects are and can be, still no 'urge' to try it, even where it is legal to do so. When I was at university, i'd sit there amongst friends who'd all be smoking and i'd just pass the thing along when it came around to me, everyone was 'surprised'. One guy a few weeks into term said I'll bet you by the end of the first term, you'll be doing this as well. I said £50 that I won't. A couple weeks into the 2nd term, so just after christmas break, he came up to me and pressed £50 into my hand and I asked what for as I'd totally forgotten. He said 'you kept your word, so im keeping mine'! All my friends knew I wouldn't have it and the same carried on when I went into my IT career and worked in London and the whole party/bar/pub/club scene with work colleagues. Plenty were taking whatever they were, when I was asked, I'd just firmly say 'double whiskey on the rocks mate'.. most people after a few confused looking seconds, would then understand. I've been the same ever since, whatever anyone else wishes to do is fine by me whatever it may be, I don't wish to be judgemental etc! Another thing is, I'd much, much rather take my car out to some of my favourite twisty roads and drive them much more spiritedly, I think I get more of a sense of excitement doing that than just sitting around feeling all mellow! for mellowness, I listen to music

Gerrarddm - As per above, what are you concerns or hesitation for getting an E39 Touring? I know we are all biased here, but I'm sure we can all potentially relate to your concerns and provide real life actual experience and advice to help give you more knowledge to help with your evaluations!

    Cheers, Dennis!

So I was just informed that Sept 3rd is labor day weekend. I'm sure people have plans, not sure anyone made form arrangements based on this (highly distracted) thread. Bit it looks like I'm headed out for the weekend.

My main concern is the car turning into a money pit. It is surprising to me, almost appalling actually, that BMW can't build reliability like the Japanese car makers. Still, I have decided to spring the cash for a pre-purchase inspection to see what is what with my likely candidate. I have driven the car, it looks and sounds good, but with 156K on the clock
(2000 528iT ) one has to be prudent. At the least I expect to be looking at a complete cooling system overhaul ( which by the way, BMW of Bellevue wants roughly $4,500 for what I was told is roughly a $1,700 job by a respected BMW independent shop. Jeesh.).

    Hi Gerrardm,

Everyones viewpoint and opinion is different ! The Japanese cars are indeed known for 'reliability', I agree with you on that. For me, they're uninvolving, wooden feeling, flimsy, lower build quality, boring, uninspiring. This is of course when comparing a like for like type of car, so perhaps the 'mid sized' equivalent from each of the big Jap makers.

Any car has the potential to be a money pit, BMW or a Japanese car and indeed any other marque as well. On the enthusiast forums, many will say to work on the car yourself etc, which is great if you can. For me, I don't know what a wrench is for, so I give my trusted mechanic all the work to do and I pay him for it. Yes, I look for the best deal on parts which I feel are good or oem quality to use, I won't put on just any cheapy part.

I know pricing is different in the USA as BMW is still regarded as an aspirational brand with the running costs associated with it. However, there are many much more reasonably priced specialists all over, much like here in the UK.

Overall, if your wallet can cover the costs of using a reputable independent specialist who will look after the car well, there's no reason it'll not be reliable. My Touring has done around 275K and the first 150K were very very hard on it as it was a Police car. I've seen 300K, 400K and even one or two 500K miled E39's out there.

This forum is of course biased to E39 Tourings, but do have a look and discussion around elsewhere and I'd think it'd be safe to say the E39 is still well regarded amongst what's available today by many non BMW owners too.

    Cheers, Dennis!

If you are serious and sure about the car in question, get a PPI to verify/confirm a potential money pit. First and foremost, how was it maintained during the previous mileage?

I purchased my wagon with 156k miles on the clock, several years ago. First owner was BMW NA and the second owner had maintained it properly from one of the best BMW independents in the states. I put 120k miles on it under my ownership. If it were not for rust at the four jack points, I'd still be driving it today, everyday. I replaced the cooling system twice, suspension; front and back - once, and a few other major items. I only had to have it towed once while out on the road. I spent less money on it over those several years than if I'd made a new car payment, for something with a considerable less smiles per mile..........

Go find a used Mazda 6 wagon, which by the way is probably the best used pacific rim wagon available, (IMHO). It's a great package. Then compare it with an E39 touring. I think you would concur that the BMW is the better of the two. Your numbers above confirm why many choose independents over dealers for service. Certain parts items from a dealer can be more cost effective than aftermarket. I bought my front air dam from the dealer. With my 'CCA discount, no delivery charge, and drop shipped to a body shop, was less than any aftermarket vendor.

    Dennis, your #36 is heartening.

IndiansFan, other than a Carfax showing some bushing work and related stuff two years ago, nothing much on record. The PPI will tell me much, I hope to get that done late next week. The current owner, a Tesla employee, took it in trade for his 740 last year and hasn't driven it much as it is surplus to his current needs. He hasn't had to do anything but change out the nav unit. I might add that I see you have a Fiat Spider... I had a 1981 Fiat Spider 2000LE several years back and it was practically flawless for me, hah.

Whidbey island might be a better choice. It requires a ferry on and off the 60 mile long lump of earth.

If a drive is on the mind, I'd suggest the Cascade Mountain Loop, hwy 20. Great drive, great views and plenty of places to shall we say, test the tires.

Well, I finally met Wagons Ho IRL (in real life for you curmudgeonly type) Neat guy. He showed up in his e39 sedan, one of them and judged me for not waxing my car. We met up @ Dick's on 45th. Damn if that isn't still THE place to see all walks of life.

While there we talked shop and exchanged banter and encountered a guy driving a hopped up Cutlas. We will either sell one of my crate 350ci engines or one Plymouth Cudda or both to this guy. He was really excited to see two bimmer guys bs'ing. He had a turbocharged 2011 3 series. We pointed him towards DUDMD for some computer magic.

It gives me hope that the rest of us Nor'western bimmerphiles can actually do it. Sure it took 6 months for us to get together and sure we both live less than 10 minutes away either in Seattle or Cle Elum but it finally happened and will probably continue to happen. Thanks bf.com!

I'm thinking a bimmer sub-chapter could be started here. A monthly gathering @ any particular Dick's drive in. I mean those shakes, damn.

I should mention that the only other person from los forums I've met was Denigod. He and I met when he was shopping for his wagon and again once said stormtrooper arrived. Also a really nice person.

While it was great to meet plattus in person and will again because he shares my level of crazy, I like the club we have here. Local cars and coffee events are probably coming to an end for the year. But Dick's is the place. I've seen big sports stars, even from other teams, and that girl last night was off the hook. Platts, regarding the wax, you have a wagon full of the best quality cleaners, compounds, and I assume wax. I know, the cobblers kids have no shoes, and my daily has a dent. Back to the idea of the local cars and coffee events. Only problem for me is the weekend schedule gets full and having the" "right" car available.

1st world problems WH, which car to bring... Really?!
I'm thinking the 1st or last weekend eve of each month. No reservations just show up if you can or get the next one. With luck, there will be one or two guys a month that could grow as time went on.

    P.S. "ma shiznit ain't no damn bi-nuss a'yo. I ain't hear'n it, I ain't hear'n it I ain't hear'n it. You sho ain't my m-f daddy!" off the hook but not the pipe.
