FS: Getrag 240 5 speed overdrive transmission from 84' 318i

**Edited from incorrectly labeled "Getrag 245".
The last 7 of donor VIN are 8700056 FYI.
Thanks, group, for clearing up the muddy naming conventions...
The transmission came from a running car with approximately 170k-200k. Manufactured 04/1983.
Buyer should renew seals before installing, but this is a great transmission for 2002 owners as well as e21 folks, or early e30 drivers running the m10 motor.
The shift plate and shifter are included as well.
My tiny garage means I'm willing to part with it for cheap.
If you're local I'll help you install it. If you're not local, I'll eat the shipping cost.

Tom, is it not common practice to refer to them as 245 since they use the complete guide sleeve assemblies as the 245/4?

I'm no expert but, as far as I have seen the g240 was introduced in the e21 1983 model year and used on e30 4 cylinders. I've never heard of a 240 referred to as a 245. Kind of like calling an m20 an m10 because they share the same chassis?

Oh, and the numbers should be right on it.

From what I am reading around the internet this transmission was also the same for the 83 320i? I currently have an automatic trans and it is definitely going to be replaced with a manual soon.

It has the same guts, but the mounting ears are different and it has no speedometer driver. The E30 318i transmission is really only useful in 318i's. And half of them had a ZF transmission instead.

As you can see near the bottom of that thread, local guy Gary Summers proved the 240 is still useful, just not as conventional (so a bit more custom fiddling for the 02 guys).

I got lucky with my 83' iS being built in August of 82', as I got under the car to see 245.0.520.00 stamped on mine. But for the record, the one I'm selling is the 240 / 5 speed overdrive.
Is it possible to convert that electrical speedo to mechanical?

lovely. So Layne's right about it being useless for all except 318i then...
How hard is it to complete fabrication to jam it in an 82'?

not useless, just less then desirable.

it will bolt directly to the back of the M10. it has the same single mount rear support so I suspect it's the same as an E21. it also uses the same shifter platform as the E21, but you will need an 83 E21 driveshaft and you lose the speedo drive.

Slight error there, the 245 was not used until 9/79. Previous E21's were 4 speed. The euro optional 5 speeds up to that point were close ratio.

It's been a while since I looked, but I was thinking it has dual rear mounts. Not a huge thing, just usually not worth messing with to have a car with no speedometer.

Right, I did not make the distinction between overdrive and close ratio for that reason.

Somewhat on topic, had a good talk with a friend at BMW Classic about the 245. Apparently they even used them on some early M3 Group-A cars, I told him BS till he shot over some pictures and shut me up. He said they "just had them around and needed to use them up".
