93 318 Window motor wiring diagram

I have a 93 318 window motor that does not work. I've tried various things, but there seems to be something I can't pinpoint (I am no expert). The short version is auto window down functions, nothing else does. Tried multiple window motors, same story.

For the interim I am thinking to bypass all the wiring and wire the motor direct to a 12v source. However, I have no idea what wires do what. This isn't like the newer E36s with 3 very simple wires. This plug has 6 pins in it. Does anyone know what each color does, any diagrams out there.

    This is driver side coupe.

The window motors in 92/93 e36s are very different than 94-98 e36s. The electronic controls are inside that big square part on 92/93. Starting in 94 they moved the controls from the motor to the body control module (ZKE). The only replacement that will work for your car is one from a 92/93 e36. Those are getting harder and harder to find. My suggestion is to try a new switch. You should be able to swap switches with the passenger side. If you end up needing a new switch be careful to get the correct one. They are color coded on the bottom and early e36 switches use a large style connector. Later ones use a much smaller connector

One other thing to keep in mind if you need a replacement motor. On 94-98 e36s the coupe drivers motor is the same as a sedan passenger motor. Not sure why but they swapped driver/passenger motors. I don't know if that holds true for 92/93 but I suspect it does only because the regulator remained the same 92-98. If the regulator is the same then it makes sense the rule about sedan passenger/coupe driver motors would remain the same.

I was able to find a spare, that I think worked, but this motor does the exact same thing as the one in the car. I guess its possible the exact same thing is wrong with the motor, but I am leaning towards a wiring issue.

However, if someone can tell me what wires I need to apply direct power to I can probably test both.

Think about what you are doing here. If you replaced the motor and it acts like the old motor it's not the motor. The motor goes one direction or the other depending on the power and ground signal. Something else is missing here. I don't know the early versions but if it were me I would start looking for a broken wire in the harness between the door and the chassis

I know its not the motor, and I know it is in the wiring. Ideally I'd like to see what each wire actually does, narrow it down.

I wonder if anyone figured this out . I have a 325is driver motor that only goes down . I can swap it into the passenger side and it goes both ways. I am sure there is a break in the wiring somewhere.

I have a few ideas (maybe the black wire is broke) I need to jumper it over to find out.

Sorry to bring up an old thread. So it's definitely not possible to cut the wires above the connector on a 96, and splice it into a 92? These dang door cards are too big to fit the flat metal door card replacements
