Awesome! That's always a nice feeling too finally getting it running.

I tell you, at first I thought the wiring bit would be the easy part, but so much can go wrong in wiring that it has become one of the most frustrating parts of this swap.

3.15 LSD arrived today after months of waiting. Looking forward to instilling that. I also got my fenders rolled a bit with the help of a friend. I really hope tomorrow is the day.
It looks like you could re-wire a bit an run a fuel pump relay instead of EKP module - check the WDS differences between US MSS52 and non-US MSS52. I'm using a regular relay for my S54 swap.

Nice! Let me know if you have issues getting the evap readiness to set. Took a while for me to figure out, but I had to send MSS54 canbus messages for running clock/fuel level/external temperature or the evap test would never run. These are usually sent from the cluster and I suspect MSS52 is the same.

I have a BAR ref appointment in about 2 weeks, hoping all goes well.

Yep, just wire up X60004 Pin 10 to the relay trigger. Don't even have to change anything in the DME; it figures out what kind of relay is hooked up live.

Thanks! I was wondering if that would be possible. I have an extra fuel pump relay in my garage.

Worked on an Excel sheet with all the wiring info today. I will post it once I know for sure everything is running well. Of course it goes without saying to use it at your own risk. I am not a professional mechanic so I take no responsibility for the use of information contained in this thread :P I spent dozens of hours pouring over wiring diagrams from the E34, E39, E32, e36, and e30. I cross checked all this information with other build threads of e36 S54 swaps, e30 S54 swaps, e30 M60 swaps and e30 S62 swaps. The information is spread all across the internet and is a bit difficult to find. I will attempt to condense it, I cross my fingers that I do not leave something out or get something wrong. Everything in this thread should be cross checked if you intend to also do this swap. It is possible that there are slight differences between wiring harnesses and pinouts on modules etc. I will post the excel spread sheet next week probably Tuesday or Wednesday.

I bolted the driveline all back up yesterday and started work on the exhaust. The stock exhaust from the e39 M5 fits pretty well. It does sit down a bit lower than the e34 exhaust but I don't intend to slam my car, so I'm not too worried about it. As for the headers contacting the heat shielding, when I bolted up the cats and then let them hang without support, it pulled the headers away so that they were no longer contacting, so I'm pretty confident that I can simply heat them up and bend them slightly to get the room I need.

    I also installed my shifter

Did this today. It's safe to say I absolutely hate replacing bushings. What a pain...hopefully it will be worth it.

Some more boring info for those wanting more details on the fuel lines. The line on top is my fuel return line. I repurposed the line that was once used as a feed line from the expansion tank to the charcoal canister, I did this because of its proximity to where I put the fuel filter. The old return line I am using as the line from the motor to the charcoal canister. Here you can see the old return line. It is not hooked up to anything yet. I'll be installing the charcoal canister in the spar tire well. On a more exciting note I cut the springs to try and figure out where I want the car to sit. I cut 2 coils in the back and 2 in the front. It looks really good. To get this ride ill probably have to go coilovers in the end.

Ok, I am not completely done with the wiring and the car has not been driven yet because my electronic throttle from the e32 is not working with my ECU. Maybe I am wiring it incorrectly or more than likely it just doesn't send the signals that the ECU needs. I ordered an M5 potentiometer since it is the same type used in the e32 and will bolt right in to the e34. That being said I am posting the wiring info. Since the car runs so well and idles perfectly, I am fairly confident the wiring is correct. Use at you own risk though. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

Here is a comprehensive list of every purchase I have made as well as the cost breakdown and my budget for the swap. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing
What this doesn't include is the hours spent on this swap. In research and actual time wrenching I have spent well over 500 hours. And I am not done... Of course I am slow and not a professional mechanic so a lot of this stuff I had to learn as I went. If you are more knowledgable than me than I am positive you could cut that time in half at least.

And here is a picture of how I left the car today. I took the CCWs off because I decided to get some wheels that actually were built for the e34 and didn't require running massive spacers. These staggered 18" style 32s will do for now.

I put the CCWs on the M3 where they belong.

I ended up getting the throttle working. I would have driven the car for the first time but while I was bleeding all the systems, one of my power steering hoses blew. It was the hose from the power steering pump to the pressure regulator. I had reamed the connection out in order to fit on the e39 pump, but it was leaking so I tried using some other parts as a temporary fix so that I could test all the systems, but the makeshift hose I came up with couldn't handle the pressure. So long story short I have to have a custom hose made by a hydraulic shop, no big deal, but it set me back. Now I'm back in dental school for my final year so probably won't be touching the car for sometime. The car runs very well though. I have to count my victories and remind myself that it will all be worth it in the end.

I'll update the wiring chart for the e throttle. My Z3M wiring diagram was not the same as my e39 M5 throttle. Which is weird since the Z3M and M5 share the same part number for the potentiometer. Oh well, I got it worked out.

My friend decided that he wanted to learn how to do his own work, so he bought this 540i to start a swap. His intentions are to follow in my footsteps and do an S62. Currently having difficulty finding him a good deal on one. I got very lucky on my S62, and mine came from someone who took really good care of their car with the service history to prove it. Finding another one like that is proving hard. If you know of anyone selling a clean S62 with under 150,000 miles for less than $5,000, let me know!

Yeah, I actually messaged him a couple days ago. He just sold his only remaining motor unfortunately. My friend actually just found a salvaged M5 up in northern Cali though. It has less than 100,000 miles. He was able to pick it up for cheap and will be driving it down this weekend.

Nice build, well done! I really like the sound and feel of a S62, even if a LS1 is more bang for the buck.

Agreed. It was just a challenge and I love BMW motors. Granted the S62 is pretty much at its max hp output unless I spend another $10,000, but I think 400 hp is plenty for me. It will put a smile on my face while still being reasonable.

Got a set of Dinan Cold air intakes. They should give me the space I'm desperately in need of under the hood. I have a break from dental school next week so I will have an opportunity to get a few issues worked out on the car.

Washed the car up and took it for a quick drive. Still having some issues, but it's coming along.

Yeah that's pretty darn cool. Once all buttoned up I'd love to see it against an e34 s38 m5!!

Yeah, that would be interesting, though since the 540i and M5 are nearly identical up to 100 mph, I really don't think it will be much of a contest, unless the S38 driver is way better than me, which honestly isn't hard since I'm not a great driver. Haha!
