I have a 1997 328i that has the original black plastic engine covers that come as standard, my question is are there any aluminium replacement items? or is it a case that they would need to be made as a bespoke item?

I'm not sure about aluminium replacements but if the objective is to make the covers look new again, repaint them.
I saw this done on trim on a forum recently and the result was spectacular. Front bummper parts looked really old, faded and grey. Sim makes a black trim paint so that's what you'll want to find. It'd be a really inexpensive and permanent solution.
