I parked my '98 right at 320k because the transmission started to slip under hard acceleration and had hail damage. Otherwise the engine was running smooth as my current '98 with 37k miles. It's serving me as a parts car for now, but the engine is going to be used for an inteesting project hopefully in the future.

Castrol oil, Hengst oil and air filters and 7k intervals.

I bought my 2001 740il in April with 212,000 miles. It has 220,000 now. I gave it a trans fluid and filter change, but it's on the original chain guides.

155k here. Bought around 140k, 145k. The garage I got it from didn't advertise they were selling it, it was just among a bunch of cars (some intact, some parted out) they had. Called and asked, they sold it to me for 5k. They had bought it for parts after the last owner had the tranny crap out, but upon receiving the car realized it was in such a great condition using it as a parts car would've been sacrilege. So they used another 7 series sport tranny, and it runs as nicely as my parents Toyotas with roughly 200k mileage on them. I'm honestly very pleased with it, it's basically a 90k luxury car with all the fixings. If it had Bluetooth and GPS it would be perfect (not the CD GPS crap, but full blown satellite communication GPS my phone has). But I am still amazed that it runs nice, sounds nice, and I can outdistance pretty much anybody I meet. Though I've never tried to street race it :-D Don't wanna end up killing someone else or breaking my back or my car.

Given the condition and the fact I treat her well, I'm expecting it to crap out around 250k or more (or end up with so many issues that I finally buy a better running one). That would be amazing milage, and right up there with my parents 97 camery (the other 2 Toyota's they ran until it finally died ended up being 350k for the sienna van which is a camery engine and minivan body, and another 01 Toyota camery that crapped out at 300k).

When I worked at the BMW dealership I had a client who refused to fly and drove all over as he was a textile salesman. He owned a 1996 740IL that had 513,000 miles on it last time I saw it and a 2000 Mercedes S600 with right at 400,000 miles on it. We serviced both and as far back as I can remember we never did the guides in the years I worked there.

My car is only a few miles from 275k, I have had the chains done while the top end was rebuild more as preventative measure.
Since this thread came back around I might as well update, I am at 306 and still going...going strong would be, well, too strong an assessment. 😳

237k. Currently getting the transmission reman'd by Eriksson. I think the key to the transmission may be fuild changes every 50k. Mine didn't have it's first until 170k.

I would agree, if not 50k than at least 100k; the idea that the fluid was lifetime was a joke. I had the first change over 200k and then not long after had to redo the TC, and the tranny is slipping again.

Trans fluid is an even bigger concern on the E38 than some others because of how the trans cooling is done. It leads to the trans running pretty damn hot. Some added cooling and fluid changes every 50k or so will definitely help a lot with longevity.

I have a -98 740iL with 197,xxx on the clock; pretty much a dd. Got it in 2004 with 50k. Broken gb a-drum was the biggest problem so far. Guides are ok so far. Runs well but have to get a # of small problems sorted.

    Cheers, jt
