New to the forum and need help with an engine harmonic (wrup...wrup...wrup...wrup) sound on my 2000 e39 M5 that has just over 92K miles.
The sound starts just below 1.5K rpm and is present up through the 2.5K rpm range. It seems to be the loudest and more constant at 2K rpms. The sound can be replicated while at a standstill and while driving. However, it becomes very apparent/present when driving on the freeway at 65 mph just over 2K rpms. The sound disappears as the rpms get closer to 3K range.
YouTube link to hear the sound clip... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpO3yCVcqhw
Thanks in advance for your help.

Can you take a video/sound clip from under the car? Hard to tell from inside the car. Originally I thought it was the fan & fan clutch.
Does it sound like this?

Thanks for the reply jdauria. Doesn't sound like the clip you uploaded. The car is going into the shop tomorrow. Hopefully they'll be able to pin point the noise.
I actually have the same noise in my car. At first I thought it was the harmonic vibrations from the oil filter housing transmitting through the car, but I ruled that out after replacing the mount. Let us know if you find out what causes it! It can be rather annoying on long highway trips..
Any update? I just started noticing this noise now too haha.

I had the noise yesterday, it wasn't as pronounced as yours, but on my way to work today it wasn't there.

I have this noise also .. I'm starting to think its the tensioners on the motor. Hopefully I will find time to remove the waterpump/alternator belt and see if the noise disappears.

Any update yet?
Sorry it has taken so long for an update. Indy shop diagnosed the issue as spun rod bearings. Repair work is almost done and should have the M5 back for the weekend. Hopefully the sound issues will be resolved. Tried to include a photo of the bearing but got an app error.
Rod bearings? I'm pretty sure that if you spun a bearing, your car would be making way worse noises than the sound in the video you posted.

Tried again to upload a photo but get a "Parse Error". Bearing in the photo looks pretty bad. Will update later in the week when I get the car back.
Not familiar with ///m tendencies but it sounds like an exhaust issue to me. I hope you have it figured out but I don't think bearings would make a sound like that directly
Considering the same type of sound from tuning a guitar I bet its your cats/muffler/resonator or a difference in compression between cylinders
(It sounds like you know about music but consider) A guitar string has the same effect when it's close to perfect; too tight or loose just a little bit and its making the same woah woah woah woah sound but besides that it's basically a good close to normal sound like any other in tune chord just like the sound your car is making
This is interesting. Subbed

Do you guys get a vibration through your steering wheel also?
No, no vibration in the steering wheel from this.

Im praying its not a spun bearing, that's an expensive phrase with any motor..

Was there any metal in the oil filter? or in the oil pan?

Well folks...got the M5 back. The rod bearing work did not resolve the issue. Very frustrating....
No steering wheel vibration issues.
Check out your exhaust hangers/mounts for tightness/correct, idk fitment? and I assume compression isn't an issue since you'd be likely experiencing major loss of power but it wouldn't hurt to check that too...
More directly let me ask, does your car seem to preform/accelerate normally?

What other tests have been done at this point? Have you done compression test? Exhaust leaks?

I would be furious with the shop that diagnosed this car....Spending thousands on rod bearing replacement and that's not the issue.

I had my friend listen to the video, and I trust him 100% with my car. He suggested: remove the accessory belts and repeat to see if it's bearing related (Alt, water pump, etc.). Also, out of balance or failed dual mass flywheel can cause noise and vibration.
