Hello enthousiasts,
I was wondering how hard it is to retrofit M Mirrors,
the tilt function should work with just the passenger module and the control unit.
But what about the auto dimming function?
And do i need wiring for the retrofit or not?
I could'nt find a good answer so maybe someone can enlighten me ?
Greetings,
Bart
Well if you have folding mirrors already the function will remain with m5 mirrors.
If you dont you need the install the buttons panel with extra button on drivers side and also small black module on the passenger side (door module)
Then it will work.
Oem m5 mirrors are electrochromatic, so when direct light hit them, they will go dark automatically.
No extra wiring required as far as I know. I fitted them and change drivers side panel so drivers mirror only is moving but have not changed door module on passenger side yet.
plenty of door modules for folding mirrors on ebay for 50 euros

If you have the proper Rain-light sensor near the rearview mirror then you run a wire set to each side door to the open plugs under each front door panel. Its plug n Play. Pinning out the connectors at the RLS can be found but I cant find it in my favorites right now. Sorry (Note the pre-wired open connector in each door is yellow and purple, i believe.)

Thanks for the replies,
GSA1 can you look it up for me i can't find annything about it. so in the black housing behind my rearview mirror that is automatic dimmable, there should be a connector with 2 empty spots? and i should run those to each door?
This is the info for wiring side mirrors for auto dimming. Naturally you will need the proper glass

if you're getting mirror replicas, get the 10-pin version that has all the features enabled including the auto-fold, and you'll need the pasenger side mirror folding module PLUS the driver side window up-down control panel which has the little button for folding the mirrors.
keep in mind they won't fold on lock or unfold on unlock unless you get a special little module for it from here (for $120) http://www.schmiedmann.com/en/produc...uct=PF46393853
one place that sells the 10-pin replica mirrors on ebay is here (for $250)

Thanks for alle the info i Will look in to it. I have a set of OEM mirrors in mind so no replica here!
hi all, I can source the M5 drivers side control panel, the control unit for foldable mirrors 6145690421 and some 10 pin replicas from ebay. However the link for the schiedmanns module a few threads above is outdated so I'm not sure what else I am looking for.
Is the window switch, control unit and 10 pin memory/auto replicas enough for me to do the retrofit / plug and play - or am I missing something? The folding feature is what I am most after. Not interested in auto dimming.
Is there a write up for this? Having a hard time coming up with instructions.

There is a video on YouTube from E39 source regarding replacement of an M5 mirror.
https://youtu.be/g0GuxqB16LU
This has some great info on install and also a potential issue with the wiring at the connector. In some cases, two wires would need to be flip-flopped from their current locations.
Apparently in some instances, like mine, when depressing the folding switch on the driver side one mirror would fold up and one would fold down. He explains all this in his video.
I used OE mirrors also...

You don't need the Schmiedmann thing - that was an aftermarket module which offered the extra functionality of folding on lock/unlock with the remote. The standard OEM functionality you will get without it is only folding when you press the button inside. If you want the fold on lock/unlock functionality, maybe you could still find a used Schmiedmann module, or there are other solutions like the Intravee and maybe more I'm unaware of.
Thanks for posting the video - that helps with the physical installation, however he is just replacing M5 mirrors to an M5 - not retrofitting to a non-M e39.
DVbimmerK, can you tell me what you had to do to get the folding function to work? Where is the control module located that needs to be replaced with the M5 version? Other than this and the potential wiring issue described in the video, is there anything else needed to enable the folding function to work?
To get the M5 mirrors to fold you need to get M5 door switch modules.
The drivers door module is the one in the door with all the switches on it.
The pass door module is behind the door panel, you'll need to remove the door panel to get t it.
I am feeling quite obtuse but please, for clarification:
Drivers side door requires: M5 window/mirror control panel only, or control panel + autofold module?
Passenger side door requires: autofold module only?
If both sides require a replacement control module to go from memory mirrors to autofold+memory mirrors, are the part numbers different from side to side?
You need 4 things.
2 M5 mirrors and 2 M5 door modules.
Yes, p/n are different, look them up on RealOEM.

Must the door modules be M5? Could be wrong but I thought modules from any E39 with folding mirrors would do?
The US E39 market never got folding mirrors except for M5's.

Thanks all for the clarifications. JP thanks, subscribing to that thread.
Does anyone know what has a narrower profile - the e39 rectangular auto folding mirrors that fold in - or the M5 mirrors that fold up?
Any difference between

And

?
