I am not even sure whether my 2000 E38 is equipped with car alarm or not. How do I know? Was it an option?
It was standard equipment on e38's imported to the USA. The DWA (anti theft alarm siren system) can be recognized by the DWA's red status LED located in the grill on top of the dash.
When you lock the vehicle with the remote key or manually from the driver's door lock cylinder...the DWA status LED should begin to flash (slowly) to indicate activation.
You can also activate the panic feature on the remote key which will sound the car's alarm siren.

{only model years that came from the factory with the IHKA w/MAX button have the DWA LED w/incorporated solar sensor...if you have an IHKA w/REST button your DWA red status LED is located in the same place, but does NOT contain the integrated solar sensor}

It's actually a pretty nice alarm. Loud siren too, not the beep beep horn. I've set mine off once, but never had a false alarm. Even with the interior ultra sonic det or tilt switch. Just need to keep sunroof shut, or at most tilted when armed
