Thanks for the info guys, had just been curious for a while if it was a business or more like Wikipedia. Whenever rules exist I always like to understand the motivation behind them, that's just me. I appreciate the time and effort of all involved and am glad this forum exists, 'nuff said.
One of the main reasons profanity is a no no is the advertisers and vendors that pay ($$$??) to keep this forum running don't like it.
Can you imagine how fast this forum would go downhill if it was allowed.
There is another Off Topic forum where there are very limited rules, sort of like the old Wild West.
Not sure if any of you have been over to it, check it out sometime.
I think the no profanity rule is a great idea. Makes the forum run more like a business where professionalism is expected. By the way great job Jim! You had just started moderating back when I was more active on the forum. Your advice that you give regarding these cars is always spot on
I appreciate all the time and effort of all the moderators and members here. Thank you for all of your help and hard work!
"No linking to competitive sites" I think this rule needs some clarification. For example: Almost every VANOS post has a link to Beisan Systems. Not a competitor's site you say? Just click their forum button and see where it takes you. Many other vendors that are frequently linked in posts here also have competitive sites but I won't name them because one notice is enough for today Seriously, where do you draw the line?
I think you draw the line at the intent of the poster.
If it is to help out a forum member, then it's OK
If the intent is to draw people away from this forum...... not OK.
I agree. The rule should account for intent. For example: Changing it to: "No recruiting/poaching members" would separate the members who want to help from those that want to hurt the forum.
On the other hand, it is possible that the site owner and/or supporting vendors really don't want any linking to competitive sites, regardless of intent, and we are both wrong. There could even be contracts in place that would be forfeited if links are found to competitive sites.
Who knows?
Skwisgaar explained this above, last paragraph in post 22.
Beisan isn't posting info here to sell his products, others are linking/recommending Beisan Systems which is OK.
Dr.Vanos is another guy that sell parts or repaired vanos units. From what I've heard he use to buy seals from Beisan, but now has them made elsewhere.
Linking to help out is OK, same as you guys linking to Craigslist about some interesting car. Your not selling it, just showing the rest of us the car.
Drawing the line isn't cut and dry, it's done on a case by case basis.
Thank you for clarifying.
A big thank you to Jim and the rest of the mods that volunteer their time and energy so the rest of us can enjoy ourselves.
