Well, not to steal the tread or start an argument, but Supersprint produced and patented these well before Evolve came to scene.

Supersprint makes them for Evolve. Seems like Italy is the main supplier for headers.

My set of SS's fit perfect. No forcing or problems during assy.

To stay on topic, Jims set looks very similar to the SS's so I'd think they would perform similar. They offer some nice savings with some changes in the collector and the spring assy separate tube set up. Let's see how they fit and perform.

I didn't ever see what these cost. Did I miss something? Where do I find them?

I see. So the consensus is that pretty much Super Sprints were probably the pioneers for our M6x/S62 headers and soon after that everybody else followed?

So, I'm assuming (which I know can be a mistake) that you got the SCM39M5 from Schmiedmann. Are these indeed going on an M5 or will they bolt up to the M62. I guess this is a dumb question, but I haven't been around BMW's for an extended time like many of you guys. I have learned a ton in the couple of years I have been. I've done three timing guide jobs and a bunch of smaller stuff. My son, my wife, and I all drive 540's and I have an extra and a parts car. Please don't be too hard on me.

Yes, that is the p/n I bought.
If you've done 3 timing guide jobs you must a good wrench.
Yes, these will fit on a 540, the pic in post 30 shows the header on a 540 tu head.

I'm not a bad wrench, true, but if it weren't for these forums, I couldn't have done it. Thanks so much. I definitely found my next order.

Jim, sorry if you already stated but do you plan on ceramic coating the headers inside and out or just the exterior?

Awesome, any chance you could read the temp of the oem manifolds then another read on the headers after install?

Well maybe. The OEM header pipes are double wall. The headers aren't.

Regardless, I would love to see the temp diff between the two.

OK, will try to get those readings. Might take 2 months before I get the Schiedmann temp readings. Remind me if I forget.

sorry Jim. Please also let us know the OD piping after the merge and on the connecting pipes. I want to plan out my exhaust and buy the piping.

did you test the temp readings of the ceramic coat yet?

I forgot all about this. Your probably going to have to remind me again, I just started to do the epoxy coating on the garage floor.

I bought an infrared thermometer-thingy to measure temps. Only problem I have is that I then spend 30 minutes measuring the surface temperature of the other crap in/on the car.

Does your IR meter have any emissivity compensation for different color things your measuring? IR readings compensation are usually base on black, no comp needed.
My IR doesn't but I have a quick response surface probe that will give the actual temp, I'll use both and see what the difference is.

No, no emissivity compensation, but it did say it would be most affected if the surface is reflective. Distance from the surface is a factor as well.

Nobody just straps a thermometer to stuff anymore? You kids and your toys. I miss testing thermostats in the kitchen for my dad.
I remember Jim, you suggested to powder coat my headers. I asked Jed and he told me I shouldn't on his Unicorns. I assume that was for fitment (each piece into the next) I did buy some thermal wrap to keep temps down around the starter and the atf reservoir side however. (not installed)
I'm not racing or s/c'd but I run 85-90mph for a good hour or two every few days and sit in traffic in the city. I thus far have no fear of heat build-up under my hood. Should I reconsider that notion?

The ceramic coating will keep the under hood temps down and help keep the exhaust inside the header hot.
Your thermal wrap does the same thing, just doesn't look as pretty.
If Jed's unicorns slip together then with a coating on them there might be a problem of them not fitting together.

M5Jed implied that he didn't like ceramic coatings, for whatever reason. Stainless steel colored with exhaust heat is very pretty, and its possible the ceramic coating would be damaged/scratched by the slip-fit joints.

You'll be pushing a bit more air than I will (thusfar) so I can see being extra cautious. Nobody needs boiled brake lines.
