Good question. An engine is at its most efficient when the throttle blade is open (which is why Valvetronic exists). However, it also strains the engine more. All of the parts are under greater stress, and there’s a greater chance of lugging.

In the 1970's, during the oil crisis, my hometown paper held a gas mileage competition. The goal was to go as far as one could on 1/4 gallon of gas. They used a closed street course on a Saturday morning.
The winner was a retired engineer who drove a 1200cc Corolla with a manual. He didn't drive fast and coasted as much as he could, which they all did. He said he won because he disconnected the accelerator pump in the carburetor, and he drove mostly in higher gears with the throttle wide open or close to it, to reduce the vacuum drag on the engine. So there's one data point to support your theory.
As for me, I drive with an open throttle in taller gears all the time in my 540-6. I do it to save shifts on my old tranny and because the torque pulls me up to speed just fine. (However, I don't do the drive-slowly part, and I'm sure my mileage isn't great.)

That '70s contest is an interesting anecdote. Hadn't thought about it in terms of stress on the engine. I figure in modern cars it's probably a wash and has negligible impact on fuel consumption either way since the DME will adjust fuel to current conditions but curious what others thought, thanks for the perspectives.
"efficiency is greatest when you're at higher loads and lower RPMs".
I guess I'm "doing it right" ha. This kid is very good at explaining this stuff, I've watched a few of his videos. computiNATEor you pretty much got it!
I've been practicing more, this is a b18b1 cylinder head from a honda. I think it's starting to get better and better.

The track rat is coming along nicely, 400hp in a miata should be a ride.

It that the stock Miata engine you turbocharged?
Yep, fully forged bottom end. Professionally ported head (not me), cams upgraded springs, titanium retainers, 1mm oversized valves, Billet oil pump gears, the whole works. All bolted up to a 6 speed tranny we will definitely grenade.
Ignore the intercooler mock up zip ties lol.

Nice upgrades to the motor. So what will blow first, the tranny or the diff?

Had to port the wastegate in my buddy's mr2, it was boost creeping up to 24 psi when we were on a 7psi wastegate lol.

Hi Leo, great photo, we almost always have gorgeous sunsets here in the land of enchantment.
Today I pulled the roof of the hotrod to paint the inside and outside, the end is in sight.
Awesome! Will have to get down there to see it soon.
Been rocking the 70k mile e34 530iA as a daily. Boring, but a totally great daily. Parting out a 5spd swapped 540i at the moment.
Bought if for the 5spd swap, but it also come on koni/HR suspension and with a set of staggered style 32’s.
Dunno if I’ll swap the 530 or not. I want an x308 XJR now. Lol.

I should take a ride up your way, maybe meet at The Blackbird?
Got the inside of the roof painted yesterday. Bought the stuff to do the headliner.
Hope to flip it over and paint the outside tomorrow depending on the weather.

Maybe a video cam in area captured them? That top crease looks tough for pdr. Good luck.

Dude where did all the used s62 engines go? I can't find one. I've found more 4.6 engines then s62 engines.
