    2014. Basically “an E90 with the Mini engine and an X AWD drivetrain”. None of which is really a bad thing. But yeah. ZERO way to confirm that there’s enough oil in the car. I mean I would not even mind so much the electric gauge if at least it gave me some vague ball park when the car was cold and had not been started yet. But no.

    And crap, I’ve been really thunkin about a dipstick suckin’ fluid changer for all the other cars now suddenly I’m thinking “WTF, couldn’t use that here!”

    Luckily no, no signs of wire chomping.

    Well, that glib little summary I gave isn't supposed to be taken too literally. Its got an N20 motor. Now BMW really took the Mini engine tech, turned it sideways and tweaked it into the N14, which then begat the N20... which begat the B48. N20 was not technically put in a Mini I guess but its the whole "TwinPower" I4 turbo family thing and if you look at the later Cooper S motors they look very much like a transverse sister to these with all the BMW technical hallmarks and brandnames (VANOS, TwinPower, Valvetronic, etc.). Its a fuzzy lineage since they for sure took the engineering they developed with PSA on the Prince motors and leveraged that into the later ones... Certainly declaring even the old motors straight up "Peugeot" motors is somewhat incorrect anyway, because BMW by all reports did the majority of the high tech engineering and just partnered on the factories and production for scale purposes... So... yeah sorta 'no' but sorta 'yes'... you get the idea.

    What's your favorite rust dissolving product? Evap-o-rust? Metal Rescue? Other? I would like to try dissolving and saving some rusty fasteners.

    Let them soak 24-48 hours in a solution of 50% CLR / 50% water. Then use a wire brush to clean them well and hit them with light oil or Fluid Film to keep rust at bay.

    Clean the metal with a wire wheel, as good as you can, then coat it all up with POR15. Get the small cans, once you open it, air will start to cure the POR15. It will be useless in less than a week. So, prep all the pieces you need to treat, you apply it with a brush, when the stuff dries, it is smooth and sealed, black, which is also a primer that can be painted over, rust be gone. Might last longer it sealed properly and left in the fridge, but I might be wrong.

    It’s been a roller coaster of a month. I moved from part time to full time at my job on the 14th of Jan. I had a run-in with another employee at my 2nd job a week later. I sold my 530i on Feb 1. My M5 rod knocked on Feb 3. I celebrated my grandmother’s 84th birthday on Saturday (2/9) with my family. She passed away early this morning (yesterday by the time you read this). God da** what a fv**ing four weeks. I feel like a punching bag.

    I've used Evap-o-rust in the past with great success. As always, YMMV, but I was blown away at what it removed and the features that remained afterwards.

    My grandmother's funeral was 10 days ago, she was 84, too. She suffered a stroke 6 and a half years ago and was bed-ridden as a result; I helped take care of her along with family.
    Anyone who lives to such an age and dies of natural causes (relatively pain-free and peacefully) desrves to have their life celebrated more than mourned. I wouldn't ask for much more than to live just as long.

    We were fortunate; she passed away in her sleep with no major maladies to mention. She lived alone from 2003 when my grandfather died from lung cancer until May of last year. I think she was just ready.
