How can BMW justify charging $80/year/car for anyone past the first year? Because it saves the lessee $140 vs. the (ridiculous) $300 upcharge that BMW already charges for CarPlay, but screws over the next owners.
I hope someone will figure out how to override this with software. This is just stupid.

Almost crashed badly today in my beater. Front Brake hose ruptured an I lost all braking. Some quick reflexes and some luck saved my ass. Vehicle is 02 Mazda tribute. Same as a ford Escape. I use is for taking the dog places and home Depot crap hauling.
Check your hoses! Freaking scary.

Dude, Glad yer ok!
Loosing the brakes is no joke! Same thing happened to me last year. I have an old beater '99 Dodge 3500, 4x4 dually truck. It runs like a top, but the brake lines got very rusted out over the years, and I never really paid attention. About a year ago, I was pulling my 16ft double axle enclosed trailer to go pick up some stuff at a friends place, I was living in Lovettsville at the time, her place is in Front Royal, the long way, all highway, was about 20 miles longer than if I took the cool zigzag route over Weather Mountain.
There is actually an underground super top secret gooberment facility up there, and I had just passed it, then the downhill section of the drive began, as I was coming up to, or should I say down to, a big curve, I hit the brakes, POP goes the brakes, and the pedal goes to the floor!!! While my brain screamed "OH SHEEEIT"!!!! I threw the tranny into 2nd gear, and started using the parking brake.
I was a good 3 miles before I got down the mountain, kept going and just took it real easy. I still did have some braking left, when I got to the bottom and pulled over, checked the brake fluid, I still had slightly less than half of the container, I limped it to her place. The line to the rear brakes blew, next to the gas tank. I cut it, pinched it with a pair of long nosed visegrips, and wound it up as if it were a can of corned beef with the key, lol. A zip tie held the pliers to the frame, I filled the trailer up, limped the truck home via the highway. Kinda glad the trailer had the electric brakes!!! But man, that "Oh sheeeit" moment sucks when it strikes!

Philly, when I first started to read the post I thought you were talking about the 540. Good that it wasn't and all was OK.
Had the same problem with my old Sable winter beater about 8 years ago on the expressway out of Beantown, the back brake line rusted thru. Had to keep pumping the brakes to get them to work, lots of down shifting.
Need to start talking smack about the SB sometime soon. Should be a good game. The Eagles looked damn tough.
I have to pick the Pat's cuz I lived near Gillette Statium before we moved. Pat's by 3.

@Snotty. Damn. That's sketchy! Nice save. Nothing worse than the pedal hitting the floor!

Jim. Yeah, glad it was not the 540. Thats got newer braided lines and has had fluid flushes every few years. The beater I never really care or look at. I may be looking closer now. Scary.
Eagles looked really good and Foles was on fire. If he shows up on SB Sunday, it's going to be a good fight.

There's no fluid level indicator or separate systems on the diagonal in your beater? I had to replace the brake hoses in my 95 Camry last year, and when onehose failed, there was a red "brake" dummy light, and lots of pedal travel, but I still had brake pressure.

Beater has a fluid level indicator and system is set up diagonal. Pedal still went to floor on initial burst. Must not be well designed. After pulling over and pumping brakes a few times I had a just a bit of braking action at the very bottom of pedal travel. I limped it home like that.

Holy Crap! The Laemmle boys are goin' all in on this build! Looks awesome man. Gotta make it down and check that ishtar out! My dads places are uninhabitable at the movement though, water off in one, and the other is in renovation-money-pit mode, so can't cruise down for a weekend w the wife like we'd like to. Next year should be good, the place with an actual boiler that's 4-seasonable should be all finished and will be empty in the off-season.
Dayum Chris... Glad it worked out OK...
Some o' you might recall exact same thing happenin' to me w/ our beater Jeep a few years back. Threaded the needle between the dumb ____ that jammed her brakes on at the last minute for reasons unknown, and a tree, and rolled up across a sidestreet luckly with no cars coming.
Its clear to me from personal experience that, at least on cheap cars, the "diagonal" idea - which I always figured sounded like a brilliant idea - don't mean crap. Would it be different w/ a German car that has separate reservoir bins for the diagonals so they are more separate? I dunno. But at least in my case, pedal went all the way to the floor, there was a tiny tiny bit of brakes there but nowhere close to "still have half the brakes". Sounds like happened to all you guys too. I also wonder about the quality of the brake lines. I've cut open ancient BMW OE rubber wheel-well lines and they have steel braid inside and are beefy as hell. Even when they were cracked and rusted etc. it'd be nearly impossible to assplode catastrophic loss from them I think... spring a big leak? Sure, but man I can't see - even if the braid was super rusty and deteriorated - that it could blow out completely like my Jeep one did.

Looks like we movin’ too! I had been looking for a place (for me) but parents found a 4 acre property in Brewster with all sorts of houses/garages/barns/guest house and are moving forward with it. Gonna rent the guest house for a bit.
