Damn, I got lucky, and when my top Sh** out on me, I was able to get a donor top from
A 60k mile M3, for 500$ including labor (entire top)

I just read the entire training module on the CVM and top operation last night lol. Next step is to start probing electrically per your suggestion.
I do have full software setup. I have not hooked up to INPA yet though. I did do a quick scan on my foxwell. There were tons of codes from being in storage and having a dead battery from 2007 :/.
After clearing things and going for a drive to pull back real codes, I only got the following on the top:
Which is interesting because the cowl lock and release works perfectly fine when I have the top in the up position.
I will ping you first for any parts that I need to replace. Thanks!

I got the same codes when it was just a kink in the top itself... Check the latches and cables under the back seat, maybe the motor or cables need adjusting, just like adjusting a brake cable on a bike

yes they are, but when it says cowl codes it usually means that (so I've been told) but it's also worth checking the main latches at the top at the windshield, that plastic in there can grenade pretty easily, and u won't know until u pull that cover off, exposing the motor and latches, which are essentially bolts driven by the motor to multiply the clamping force at the windshield... But like I said above cowl lock codes are generally storage compartment related... When the top is down and the storage compartment is closed all the way, can you lift either side of the storage compartment at all? Like is there any play in one side more than the other when you pull up?
It may be that you need the storage compartment microswitch

I dropped my issue into a new thread - Vert Top Issue... Yes Another One
https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?url...9&share_type=t so that I don't hijack this thread.
The micro switch appears to be operating fine from the live data readout on the computer.
The cover was not locking properly on the left side until I adjusted the Bowden cables.

I was going to suggest that or bumping my old thread, anyhow...
It's day 3 of my E46 being borrowed by my brother, because his E60 is having its AC compressor replaced... I KNOW it's not getting the attention I would give it, but that's not saying much... Unnerving at least
Just got my E46 back from my brother, AND...:
check engine light for SAP, broken window button, AND Bluetooth mic hanging further off my A pillar... CEL has been off steadily for 8 months
Last time he borrows my car...
Luckily I had my emissions done and passed last week... Ughh, no wonder his cars never work right

Replaced the MAF with a Siemens/VDO part from fcpeuro. Purrs!

Replaced the drivers rear axle. Noise persists.
I say u bite the bullet and go to an Indy... OR go to the dealership for a multipoint inspection, with the understanding they will not actually be fixing any of it, that worked well for me, and gave me a list of things to work on, as for the lit they gave me, only OnE gasket actually didn't need replacing, EVERYTHING else they had on the report was ACTUALLY worn out, imagine that ? An "honest" service Dept... I think if there is the understanding that you will not be paying them for any repairs regardless of what they find, they don't "find" things that aren't actually wrong, because they know they aren't going to get the money for fixing it
Oh so on top of the other Shiite my brother did, broke my all up and down window button

Took out my buddies track prepped e46 m3 and my e36 323is
Today's Repairs:
- SAP Hose. The old Hose was so shot it felt like gooey rubber and had a blow hole next to the valve
- Replaced left side window switch. The front window and all up/down plastic bits were broken
- Replace FSR/U. What a PITA, but I have Air and heat again!!!
Have a long list of additional items, but that's all the time I had tonight.

Bought her a treat last night...
A Kenwood kdc-X700 car stereo.
CD player, Bluetooth, HD radio, Pandora/iheart radio support, subwoofer controls, etc...
Finished soldering the wiring harness adapter already.
Putting it in today.
Won auction on a second Passport 9500ci shifter pro, from eBay, to go along with the other 9500ci I have in my "D5" and ordered some ALP heads from Panjo, a BFC member... So now all three BMWs will have Protection for "LEOs" (Law Enforcement Officers) as they call (abbreviate) them in the Radar defense world...
- Replaced what appear to be "factory fresh" BMW branded NGK plugs at the ripe age of 103k.
My coils do appear to be the old style with the detachable boots, but I failed to order them ahead of time.
- replaced my passenger headlight ballast that corrected my headlight issue.
Previous owner had purchased two new bi-xenon bulbs thinking that was the issue, but was the ballast which is a PITA to get to for what it is.
- replaced really crispy VCG (must have been the original)
- replaced cabin air filter too
- replaced fuel filter
- removed and rebuilt DISA (actually looked to be in pretty good shape)
- removed and cleaned idle control valve
The yahoo (assuming it's never been touched sense new) who installed the lower intake boot had the clamp on upside down. So while trying to fight to get access to that clamp, I ended up tearing the small elbow on the boot. So frustrated...
So now since I need to replace that and I'm going to be doing the OFHG, I went ahead and ordered the cold climate CCV kit. So, "while I'm there", I will go ahead and take care of that PITA job too.

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought the factories from this era car was the Bosch "vroooom" center fold quad tipped plugs ? I know that's what was in my 01 e39

Part 3 of the cooling system refresh:
*Expansion tank (Behr)
*Expansion tank cap (Behr)
*Distribution plate (Üro)
*Expansion tank thermostat (BMW)
*Radiator (Behr)
The fan clutch had previously been replaced, so no need to do that again. I did the water pump, thermostat, upper and lower radiator hoses, and auxiliary fan switch over the past 6 months. Word to the wise: do the whole thing at once, don't piecemeal it the way I did; it just prolongs the agony.
